CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At Launch Complex 39 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, insulation material is delivered to roofers on one of the Propellants North Administrative and Maintenance Facility buildings by a boom lift. The insulation has an R-40 rating, compared to the insulation under the roof of an average home which has a rating of R-10 or R-15. The facility will have a two-story administrative building to house managers, mechanics and technicians who fuel spacecraft at Kennedy adjacent to an 1,800-square-foot single-story shop to store cryogenic fuel transfer equipment. The new facility will feature high-efficiency roofs and walls, Cool Dry Quiet air conditioning with energy recovery technology, efficient lighting, and other sustainable features. The facility is striving to qualify for the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, Platinum certification. Black Constructors, which is the contractor who built the first barracks building at Fort McCoy, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Resident Office at Fort McCoy. The new contract was awarded Sept. 29, 2020, and the notice to proceed was issued Oct. 28, 2020. The contract duration is scheduled for completion in 780 calendar days. Currently contract completion is scheduled for December 2022. The barracks is different than the traditional barracks located throughout the installation. This new building will be four stories and able to house 400 people in approximately 60,000 square feet.
