Chinese Ships at Nagasaki. Artist: Unidentified Artist Japanese, 19th century. Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Sheet: 6 3/8 x 18 3/16 in. (16.2 x 46.2 cm). Date: ca. 1840.Two Chinese ships approach the port of Nagasaki. The crew works quickly to lower one of the sails of the ship in the foreground as a small vessel approaches with a group of returning traders. Above the slopes of the shore at the right of the print is a red seal with the name of the print's publisher. It reads "Bunsaido". An inscription at the upper left of the print declares the ships to be trading vessels from Qing China. It is followed by an inscription detailing the mission. Agamemnon Laying the Atlantic Telegraph Cable in 1858: a Whale Crosses the Line 1865-66 Robert Charles Dudley British One of the 19th century's great technological achievements was to lay a telegraphic cable beneath the Atlantic, allowing messages to speed back and forth between North America and Europe in minutes, rather than ten or twelve days by steamer. An initially successful attempt in 1858, led by Cyrus W. Field and financed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, failed after three weeks. Two working cables were finally laid in July and September 1866, the result of repeated efforts by the indefatigable Field, a cadre of engineers, technicians, and sailors, two groups of financial backers, and significant help from the British and United States navies. This watercolor by Dudley shows the H.M.S. Agamemnon laying cable in 1858. Terrible Enemy that lies hidden in sea. Here we see a submarine in actual war. It is attacking a battleship, and has just struck the great vessel with a torpedo. But the battleship is unable to reply, for the mysterious submarine is hurling its death-dealing missiles beneath the waves, quite out of sight of its opponent. The artist has drawn the submarine in sections to show what the inside is like. When a ship is moving, a torpedo is never fired directly at her. A torpedo travels very slowly compared with a shot from a gun, and because of this, a ship could steam of out of danger if the torp
