Illustration to "Strife and Peace" 1866 George John Pinwell Pinwell belonged to the Idyllists, a group of young British artists active from the mid 1860s into the 1870s (others in the group were Frederick Walker and Arthur Boyd Houghton). This meditative image responds to a poem by Jean Ingelow and was engraved by the Dalziel Brothers, then published in Ingelow's "Poems" (1867, p. 266; see 65.629.11 and 20.72 for copies of the volume in the Met's collection). Related lines of verse read: "Trouble and no release; / But the babe whose life awoke the strife / Hath entered into peace," the implication being that the baby held by the seated woman in the background of the drawing beyond a closing door, has just died. Pinwell responds in a typically meditative way to this sad subject. Joan Serra, known as "el Pera" (d. 1815). Catalan bandit who terrorised the inhabitants of the area around the town of Valls (province of Tarragona, Catalonia). Serra killed his victims without stealing anything from them, only for the pleasure it gave him, as he himself confessed before being executed. Moreover, after committing a murder, he would go to Valls at night, kneeling in front of the door of the Esglèsia del Carme (Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), lighting a couple of candles and praying to the Virgin for himself and his victims. After being imprisoned, on 19 December 1815 he was hanged, his remains dragged in a basket by a donkey, later dismembered and his head was exhibited in public in Valls. L'Innominato, from "Illustrated London News" July 19, 1862 William Luson Thomas This print reproduces Guardassoni's painting of 1856 (Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan) and represents a pivotal moment in the historical novel "I Promessi Sposi" (The Betrothed, 1827) by Alessandro Manzoni. We here witness the conversion of LInnominato (unnamed man), who has kidnapped Lucia, the betrothed of the title, at the behest of the evil Don Rodrigo. After listening to a sermon by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, lInnominato decides to defy the powerful, evil men whom he has served, and escort Lucia back to her home village. These actions eventually bring about the downfall of Don Rodrigo. The skilled wood engraver William Luson Thomas made the print for the "Illustrated London News" in 1862.
