Janis Niedra (RPT/Thermal Energy Conversion Branch) is using a Helmholtz coil to measure the approximate remanence of a magnet segment. The magnet segment being measured is similar to the ones used in the linear alternator of the Advanced Stirling Convertor (ASC) which was designed and built by Sunpower, Inc. The magnet (not shown in this view) is positioned in the slot cut along the top of the aluminum block which is positioned at the center of the coil in the region of uniform sensitivity. The ASC is the type of free-piston Stirling convertor that is used in the Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator (ASRG) currently being developed by Lockheed-Martin for the Department of Energy and NASA.

Tim Berners-Lee (born 1955), British computer scientist and principal developer of the World Wide Web (WWW or Web). Berners-Lee studied at Oxford University. After working in industry, Berners-Lee moved to CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva. It was there that Berners-Lee developed the Web, a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents. These are text documents which have other data, such as images or links to other computers, embedded in them. The Web started in 1989, and now links thousands of host computers through the Internet. Berners-Lee left CERN in 1994 and is now at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Photographed in 1997.

Director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, Jim Green, is seen during a press conference previewing Cassini's End of Mission, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017 at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Since its arrival in 2004, the Cassini-Huygens mission has been a discovery machine, revolutionizing our knowledge of the Saturn system and captivating us with data and images never before obtained with such detail and clarity. On Sept. 15, 2017, operators will deliberately plunge the spacecraft into Saturn, as Cassini gathered science until the end. The plunge” ensures Saturn’s moons will remain pristine for future exploration. During Cassini’s final days, mission team members from all around the world gathered at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, to celebrate the achievements of this historic mission.

The Direct Gain Solar Thermal Engine was designed with no moving parts. The concept of Solar Thermal Propulsion Research uses focused solar energy from an inflatable concentrator (a giant magnifying glass) to heat a propellant (hydrogen) and allows thermal expansion through the nozzle for low thrust without chemical combustion. Energy limitations and propellant weight associated with traditional combustion engines are non-existant with this concept. The Direct Gain Solar Thermal Engine would be used for moving from a lower orbit to an upper synchronous orbit.

How do you measure a cloud Tim Bencic does it with lasers. The NASA Glenn engineer invented a tomography system for our Propulsion Systems Lab to help understand the dangers of ice crystal icing on airplanes. Bencic’s system, affectionally called “Tim-ography” is like a CAT Scan. The laser light within its circular geometry bounces off the surface of ice particles in the cloud and fiber optic detectors map out its properties. This tool is helping NASA’s researchers make aircraft safer in challenging weather conditions.

Our daily work involves the investigation of viruses such as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, Marburg hemorrhagic fever, Lassa fever, Rift valley fever virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, arenaviruses and hantaviruses, and other recently identified and emerging viral diseases. Almost all of these viruses are classified as Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) pathogens and as such must be handled in special facilities designed to contain them safely. SPB operates one of th
