KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - - While adjusting the image, technicians at Cape Canaveral Air Force Stations Radiographic High-Energy X-ray Facility look at X-rays taken of one of the rudder speed brake actuators to be installed on the orbiter Discovery. The four actuators are being X-rayed to determine if the gears were installed correctly. Discovery has been assigned to the first Return to Flight mission, STS-114, a logistics flight to the International Space Station.

The researchers use electroencephalography on a person looking at a geometrical shape in order to measure brain activity at the moment when the person perceives a change of perception in this same shape. The recordings allow the various cerebral micro-states to be detected. Cameras allow the subjects position to be visualised and the correct positioning of the electrodes to be checked. Dr Britz, a neuroscientist at the University of Geneva and the Lausanne Federal Polytechnic School, has brought to light an important characteristic of conscious thought. Using neuroimagery methods and mathematical analysis, she has shown that conscious thought can be broken down into a succession of cerebral micro-states, or « thought atoms » . The temporal sequence of these micro-states is chaotic. This chaotic organisation of cerebral activity seems to be the key to allowing the brain to react quickly to unexpected

Reportage in the Interventional Cardiology and Rythmology service in Saint George Clinic in Nice, France. Radiofrequency ablation of cardiac arrhythmia using the Stereotaxis robotic system. This operation consists of inserting a catheter into the heart, emitting radio waves that will cauterize cardiac tissue responsible for rhythmic irregularity. The Stereotaxis robotic system is a magnetic navigation system. It uses a rotating magnetic field enabling the ablation catheter to be guided from a distance. The system consists of two giant magnets placed on each side of the operating table. The operation is carried out under radioscopic control. It is a more precise technique that reduces the risk of complications, procedure length and the patients and radiologists exposure time to x-rays. A patient suffering from atrial fibrillation. The system is being developed by the graduate students participating in the eXploration HABitat X-Hab Academic Innovation Challenge.X-Hab Academic Innovation Challenge is a university-level activity designed to engage and retain students in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, disciplines. NASA will directly benefit from the effort by sponsoring the development of innovative habitat concepts from universities which may result in innovative ideas and solutions that could be applied to exploration habitats.
