Life Mask of Abraham Lincoln. Artist: Leonard Wells Volk (1828-1895); Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, Dublin 1848-1907 Cornish, New Hampshire). Dimensions: L. 8 in. (20.3 cm). Date: 1860, cast 1886.In 1860 Volk made molds of the face and hands of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). The life mask reproduces Lincoln's beardless face as it appeared during his first presidential campaign. The hand (2007.185.1) grips a broomstick, a prop that Lincoln improvised upon Volk's suggestion that he hold something cylindrical resembling a document. In 1886 Saint-Gaudens, the collectors Thomas B. Clarke and Erwin Davis, and the journalist Richard W. Gilder together purchased the original plaster casts to present to the Smithsonian Institution. To finance the donation, they sold bronze and plaster casts after Volk's originals, with production supervised by Saint-Gaudens. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Mrs. Russell (Mariana Mattioco della Torre) modeled 1888, cast 1979 Auguste Rodin French Mariana Russell, the wife of the Impressionist painter John Peter Russell, modeled for Rodins sculptures of ancient goddesses. Likely inspired by her evenly proportioned, classical features, the artist portrayed her variously as Ceres, Minerva, and Athena. In 1888 Rodin modeled her portrait in wax; this later bronze cast captures her dignified beauty. Her hair is pulled back, emphasizing her broad jaw, strong nose, and full lips. She appears aloof yet feeling, simple yet intelligent: a woman of depth and character. Rodin often expressed his preference for frank portraiture: "Even the most insignificant head is the dwelling-place of life.. and so offers inexhaustible matter for the masterpiece.". Asakurajô (Old Man Asakura) Noh mask Made 1501-1599 Japan. AsakurajÙ masks are used for older male roles such as woodcutters, fishermen, and ferrymen. The gaunt face and pronounced wrinkles point to a life of hard work. Little of the white pigment that once covered the face remains, while red pigment on the lips can still be discerned.The name of the mask may have originated when a similar mask was given to Lord Asakura Takakage (1493ñ1546), daimyo of a region in what is today western Shizuoka.
