. The sculptor Louis Royer studied in Rome during the years 1823 to 1827. A highpoint of this period was undoubtedly his portrait of Pope Leo XII. Unusually, the pope posed personally for the young artist. This was not only important for Royers reputation, but also ensured that the bust was a good likeness.

Harlets cover the ears, the hair on the back of the head is held together by a bow and falls on the right shoulder in a tail. The bust ends with the upper arms and below the breast, where it turns into a cylindrical lower piece. Chalier is wearing a shirt open on the breast with upright collar and lace deposit. John Paul Jones (1747-1792) 1903, after a model of 1781 After a model by Jean Antoine Houdon French John Paul Jones, the Scottish-born hero of the American War of Independence, was celebrated in France for his cross-channel exploits against the powerful British navy. In 1780, Houdon was commissioned to make Jones's bust by the Loge des Neuf Soeurs, the Parisian Masonic lodge named after the Muses, to which both men belonged (he had also just produced the busts of two other Lodge members, Franklin 72.6 and Voltaire 1972.61). Unlike so many of Houdon's subjects, who appear to be interacting with their immediate company, Jones's knitted brow and narrowed gaze give the impression of a seaman appraising some threat on the distant horizon.The likeness of the handsome but temperamental Jones, shown in his naval uniform with his natural hair brushed tightly back and tied, was much appreciated by the sitter, who ordered numerous plaster copies for his friends and associates. Belisarius and His Guide 1794 Antoine Denis Chaudet French The popularity of the victorious sixth-century Byzantine general Belisarius aroused the jealous wrath of his emperor Justinian to the point that he had Belisarius imprisoned, then blinded and turned loose to beg for his living. Antiroyalist elements in French society found parallels in the court of Louis XVI, which was coming under increased criticism. When the terracotta model for this group was exhibited at the Salon of 1791, the sentimental Neoclassical public surely relished its pathos and the contrast between the forms of the sightless but ever-proud mendicant and his weary young guide. The quality of the bronze's chasing led early commentators to suppose Chaudet carried it out himself, but more likely he turned to a professional foundry for the expertise needed to give the metal its dazzling range of surfaces. Jules Bastien-Lepage 1880, cast 1910 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American Saint-Gaudens first met the artist Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) in 1868 while studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He renewed his acquaintance with the French painter upon his return to Paris in 1877, and, as Saint-Gaudens later recalled, Bastien-Lepage "asked if I would make a medallion of him in exchange for a portrait of myself. Of course I agreed to the proposal." The last and most ambitious of the medallions depicting artist-friends completed during the sculptor's French tenure (1877-80), this portrait announces a complete technical and compositional mastery of the bas-relief. The painter's compact form fills the right and center of the composition, while his palette and brushes command its lower third. His hair and beard are neatly kept, and he wears a jacket, shirt with upraised collar, and loosely knotted tie.
