Former Attribution: Washington Allston (American, Georgetown, South Carolina 1779-1843 Cambridgeport, Massachusetts). Date: ca. 1813.Representations of the Flood, described in Genesis as the overwhelming punishment for humanity's flagrant sins, go back to the early Renaissance. In Shaw's day, J. M. W. Turner and Benjamin West also painted this subject. In the Museum's terrifying depiction of the darkness and desolation, painted about 1813, Shaw is indebted to West's treatment of the theme, adopting for the foreground of his own painting West's uprooted tree, which lies diagonally on the earth, surrounded by the ghastly bodies of the drowned, and festooned with the limp carcass of a gigantic snake. West seems not to have minded Shaw's borrowing and wrote to him in high praise of this powerfully romant

The Banks of the Seine at Conflans ca. 1865-70 Camille Corot French In 1868, about the time this work was painted, the aspiring artist Odilon Redon noted Corots advice "to place an unknown next to a known" in his compositions. That approach to picture-making is evident in this scene of workers, which has a ring of familiarity although the precise labor depicted resists identification. It is replete with details, such as the fruit on the tree at the center and the lettering on the sign at the top right, that favor painterly qualities over legibility. Yet the painting appears to be far more grounded in observation than the landscapes Corot typically conjured in his later years.. The Banks of the Seine at Conflans. Stack of Wheat (Thaw, Sunset) 1891 France. The monumental stacks that Claude Monet depicted in his series Stacks of Wheat rose fifteen to twenty feet and stood just outside the artistís farmhouse at Giverny. Through 1890 and 1891, he worked on this series both in the field, painting simultaneously at several easels, and in the studio, refining pictorial harmonies. In May 1891, Monet hung fifteen of these canvases next to each other in one small room in the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris. An unprecedented critical and financial success, the exhibition marked a breakthrough in Monetís career, as well as in the history of French art. In this view, and in nearly all of the autumn views in the series, the conical tops of the stacks break the horizon and push into the sky. But in most of the winter views, which constitute the core of the series, the stacks seem wrapped by bands of hill and field, as if bedded down for the season. (114.3 x 81.28 cm) (outer frame), Oil on canvas, United States, 19th century, Born in Muhlen-am-Neckar, Germany, Weyl began his working life as a watchmaker's apprentice. After immigrating to the United States, he set up shop in Washington, D.C. and in his off-hours began painting still-lifes. He finally gathered the courage to exhibit his paintings in his shop window in the early 1870s and soon they came to the notice of a customer, Samuel Kauffmann (publisher of the Evening Star and the president of the Board for the Corcoran Gallery of Art), who became a steady patron. Purchases by Mrs. Grover Cleveland and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson eventually placed the artist's works in the White House. Buoyed by the sale of his paintings, he went to Europe in 1879, where he came under the influence of the French Barbizon painters. He subsequently became know as the 'American Daubigny.

Inside the Bar 1883 Winslow Homer American In 1881, Homer traveled to England on his second and final trip abroad. For reasons both personal and professional, he sought a place of retreat. After passing briefly through London, he settled in Cullercoats, a village near Tynemouth on the North Sea, remaining there from the spring of 1881 to November 1882. Situated on sandstone cliffs above a small bay, Cullercoats was a fishing community, which, like nearby Tynemouth, attracted artists and photographers in search of the picturesque. Homer soon became sensitive to the strenuous and courageous lives of its inhabitants, particularly the women, whom he depicted hauling and cleaning fish, mending nets, and, most poignantly, standing at the water's edge, awaiting the return of their men.In Cullercoats, Homer worked almost exclusively in watercolor. On large sheets such as this one, he perfected traditional English techniques, laying out compositions with broad, overlapping washes of color. The
