The Queen Wears Outfit To Match Ship - The Southern Cross ***** down the slipway at Balfast yesterday. The Queen yesterday wore a Princess line coat and matching hat in pastel green - the same colour as the upper works of the liner she was launching at Belfast. While waiting to pull the launching lever the Queen stood under a canvas canopy, bulging under the weight of rain water. She smiled when Lord Brookeborough, the Prime minister of Northern Ireland, who was standing beside her, pointed at the ominous bulge and said, "I hope that doesn't come through." August 18, 1954.

Admiralty Built Tanker For Australian Government - The "Tide Austral" entering the water after the launching ceremony.The fast replenishment tanker "Tide Austral" has just been launched at the Musgrave Yard of Messrs Harland and Wolff Ltd, at Belfast. The naming ceremony was performed by Mrs. Foley, wife of captain J.B. Foley, C.B.E.. A.D.C.. R.A.N. Royal Australian Naval Liaison Officer London, who was also present. A bottle of Australian wine was used in naming the vessel. The extreme length of 583 feet (550 feet between perpendiculars) the "Tide Austral" has a beam of 71 feet and deadweight of 17,700 tons. USS The Sullivans Goes Down the Ways -- A U.S. destroyer, named for the five Sullivan brothers, who died together in the service of the U.S. Navy, is launched at a U.S. West Coast shipyard to avenge their deaths. The Sullivans, serving on a U.S. cruiser, were lost when their ship was sunk in the south pacific last year. Mrs. Thomas Sullivan of the western U.S. State of Iowa, mother of the five boys, christened the ship the USS the Sullivans. May 24, 1943.

Britain's New Liner Enters The Water -- The New 28,000 ton Penisular and Orient liner 'Iberia' enters the water after its launching at the Harland and Wolff Shipyards, Belfast, today (Thursday).The ship was named by Lady McGrigor, wife of the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Rhoderick McGrigor. She is a sister ship of the Arcadia which was built on the Clyde and is due to make her maiden voyage from Tilbury to Australia next month.The Iberia is a twin - screw geared turbine Liner built on Modern lines for carrying passengers and cargo. First Picture Of New Tanker -- Ampol Petroleum Limited's new oil tanker, the "William G. Walkley," leaves the slipway at the shipyard of the Blyth Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, on June 11. The tanker which has a deadweight of 18,000 tons and a displacement of 22,000 tons, is the largest oil tanker ever built for an Australian oil company. It will undergo trials off the coast of Northumberland and is expected to reach Australia in February, 1954. January 01, 1953.
