Princess Margaret Launches The "Maori" - The "Maori" hits the water after the launching by Princess Margaret.Princess Margaret launched the 8,000-ton passenger liner "Maori" at Vickers-Armstrong, Naval Yard, High Walker here. The twin-screw turbo-electric ship has been ordered by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand Limited, and will serve between Wellington, New Zealand, and Lyttelton, near Christchurch, New Zealand.The 454-feet-long vessel will carry 970 passengers. Launch of The Kenya Castle Round Africa Service.Lady Mitchell, wife of the Governor of Kenya, Major-General Sir Philip Mitchell, recently named and launched the "Kenya Castle" a liner of 17,300 tons, for the Union Castle company in Belfast.The ship was built by Messrs. Marlan and Wolff in their Belfast shipyards for the Union Castle Company, who for many years have been closely associated with Kenya. Like the Rhodesia Castle which was launched in Belfast earlier in the year, the Kenya Castle will be employed in the round Africa service and will be employed in the round Africa service and will carry all her 530 passengers in one class. Council Row in Ballarat Likely - Legal action and a lively municipal row seem likely as a result of a City Council decision to grant a five-year lease of the City Oval, for certain days each year, to a private company, the Ballarat Road Racers Pty. Ltd. 'Monkey Test': "I was taken out of my cell after I had fainted. The guards took me to a room where I was laid on a table, and a large torch was flashed into my eyes for two and a half hours." Antonov said that on an-other occasion he was given the "monkey treatment" - nine men fired questions at him one after another. Some of the questions were silly and, some serious, but he had to answer quickly. He was later sent to a concentration camp near Murmansk for nine years. One of a series of concentration camps on the Baltic-White Sea canal construction scheme held a million prisoners, Antonov said. Secret police once beat him insensible. Antonov denied the allegations in the Russian Note. February 28, 1949

Largest Post-War Liner Launched - The liner Orcades after being launched by Lady Mors-head, goes down the slipways into the water at Barrow-in-Furness today. The 31,000-ton liner Orcades, Built for the Orient line by Vickers-Arm-sarong Limited, and which is the biggest merchant ship to be launched in any country since the end of the war, successfully went down the slip-ways at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs., today (Tuesday). The Launching ceremony was performed by Lady Morshead, wife of Lieut-Gen. Sir Leslie Morshead, manager of the Orient Line. The Orcades is intended for the Australian run, and will carry 1,500 passengers with cargo and mail. With a speed of 22 and a half knots the ship will cut the pre-war service schedule between England and Melbourne from 56 days. The largest passenger liner yet built at Barrow, the Orcades is estimated to cost $3,000,000 and is of an entirely new design. October 14, 1947.

Southern Cross Afloat - Proudly riding the water after her launching by the Queen today (Tuesday) is the new Shaw Savill luxury liner the Southern Cross, built at the Belfast yard of Harland and Wolff. The ship, of 20,000-tons, has funnel and engines is stalled aft like an oil tanker and is intended for service between Britain and Australia and New Zealand. She cost more than seven million pounds and will not carry any cargo. August 17, 1954.

Something New in Ships Arrives in the "Pool" - A view of the M.S. "Braemar" as seen from London Bridge, showing the glass lounge on the main deck and the streamlined funnel and mast. Tower Bridge can be seen in the background. Sightseers on London Bridge have been keenly interested in the new Norwegian motor ship, the "Braemar" lying at New Fresh Wharf, London Bridge, which is one of her one of ports of call on her maiden voyage with passengers. She has already called at Aberdeen and Leith on the way from Oslo and will sail home again on Saturday (May 23rd) via Gothenberg to her home port of Oslo.
