On Thursday 8th October 2020, Florence Parly, Minister of the Armed Forces, visits two defence companies essential to the economic fabric of the Brittany region. The Minister of the Armed Forces first visits SOCARENAM, a French shipbuilding company, where she will visit the construction site of an overseas patrol boat (POM). The design and construction of the six POMs represent, on SOCARENAM's sites and for its many subcontractors in France, between 500 and 600 highly qualified jobs that cannot be relocated. Hopper dredge Essayons operates in the Columbia River near Cathlamet, Washington on July 25, 2022. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hopper dredge Essayons, operated by a merchant marine crew, was delivered to the Portland District in 1983. The Essayons helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River. Because of its size and dredging depth, the Essayons is particularly well-suited for dredging the larger coastal entrances and larger volume sand deposits in river channels.

The 680-metric-ton, 60-foot-tall lower bow unit was joined to the other keel sections and was the last major section of the ship installed below the waterline. Gerald R. Ford is now more than 75 percent structurally complete in the dry dock, and is on schedule to launch in 2013. The ship is scheduled to be delivered to the fleet in 2015.

A test version of the Orion crew module is guided into the flooded well deck of the USS San Diego for Underway Recovery Test 5. NASA's Ground Systems Development and Operations Program and the U.S. Navy will conduct a series of tests using the ship's well deck, the test module, various watercraft and equipment to prepare for recovery of Orion on its return from deep space missions. The test will allow the team to demonstrate and evaluate recovery processes, procedures, hardware and personnel in open waters. Orion is the exploration spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to destinations not yet explored by humans, including an asteroid and NASA's Journey to Mars. It will have emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. Orion is scheduled to launch on NASA's Space Launch System in late 2018.

A broken portion of John Day Lock and Dams upstream navigation lock gate has slowed river traffic through that portion of the Columbia River. U.S. Army Corps technicians found the damage to a lower guide wheel July 25, 2022, and began repairs immediately, while maintaining lock operations, limiting the impact on the passage of commercial and recreational vessels.John Day Lock & Dam is located 216 miles upriver from the mouth of the Columbia River near the city of Rufus, Ore.Dedicated in 1968, construction of John Day Lock & Dam was completed in 1971. The project, which consists of a navigation lock, spillway, powerhouse and fish passage facilities, is authorized for navigation and hydroelectric power generation. Various recreational facilities are provided along Lake Umatilla and the John Day River.
