The Death of Camilla. Artist: Jacques Louis David (French, Paris 1748-1825 Brussels). Dimensions: 14 7/16 x 15 9/16 in. (36.7 x 39.5 cm). Date: ca. 1781.Before painting his Neoclassical masterpiece The Oath of the Horatii (Musée du Louvre, Paris), David explored many episodes of the story in sketches. In this sheet, David portrays the death of Camilla in the aftermath of the battle between the ancient Roman and Alban tribes. To spare lives, each tribe had delegated three warriors to settle the dispute. The lone survivor of the contest, Horatius, has returned to find his sister, Camilla, grieving for her slain fiancé, a member of the Curiatii clan. In his anger over her unpatriotic display of emotion, Horatius kills her on the spot. Although he would ultimately choose an earlier and less unsavory moment of the story, David carried over into the final painted version the idea of using the female expression of grief as a counterpoint to male acts of bravery and patriotism. Paragons of Loyalty and Filial Piety 1593 Wang Shanggong Chinese Illustrations of historical paragons of piety and loyalty have been an important method of transmitting those virtues since at least the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220). In the eleventh century, the scholar-artist Li Gonglin (ca. 1041-1106) gave new meaning to this tradition with his Classic of Filial Piety, in which simple monochrome drawings not only illustrate the text but also present subtle commentaries on contemporary society. In this painting, Wang Shanggong, a little-known artist from Suzhou, reinvigorated the role of artist as social critic by reviving the Li Gonglin tradition in both subject matter and style. Living under the rule of the Wanli emperor (r. 1573-1620), who refused to come to court for the last twenty-five years of his reign, Wang presented interpretations of important themes, such as officials admonishing their ruler and the emperor receiving his ministers, which must have held particular signific

A Group of Five Heads and Further Studies 1830-44 Theodor Richard Edward von Holst The drawing represents a row of five heads that include young men, a woman, and two older bearded men wearing hats. Below are studies of a hand, and twisting figures. The imagery has not been connected to a particular source, but romantic literary and fantastic subjects predominate in Von Holsts oeuvre, often insprired by Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, and Goethe.Von Holsts precocious talent was recognized by Thomas Lawrence, who bought a drawing from the youth when the latter was ten years old. After taking lessons from Henry Fuseli, Von Holst entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of fourteen in 1824. Fuseli remained a strong influence stylistically and the works of the two artists have often been confused. In 1959, an album assembled by John Welch Etherington Rolls (1807-1870) appeared at auction containing drawings by both artists, and subsequent research allowed a core group to be
