Many Feared Dead -- Rescuers digging through the deep snow to reach the buried villagers in Bareges, Pyrenees.Several hundred men, including mountaineers and soldiers, are working desperately to reach villagers of Bareges, in the Pyrenees, France, who have been buried alive by a series of avalanches.Half the village is buried in snow to a depth of 30 feet and it is feared that many people have been killed and injured. The casualties would have been higher but for the fact that villagers began to evacuate their homes before the avalanches commenced. March 25, 1939.

U. S. Soldiers Examine Snow-Covered German Tank Blasted In Belgium -- American infantrymen of the Third U. S. Armored Division climb on top of a Snow-covered camouflaged German Mark V tank abandoned by the enemy when it was knocked out by Allied units which halted a German counter-attack launched into Belgium December 16, 1944. By a rapid regrouping, the First and Ninth U. S. Armies and British forces attacked on the northern flank of the German salient, while the Third U. S. Army countered on the south after a dash from the Saar. In 17 days, 400 German tanks were destroyed and several hundred more were damaged, and 647 planes shot down, with 64 probables and 230 damaged.
