S65-63898 (15 Dec. 1965) --- This picture of the Earth-orbiting Gemini-6 spacecraft against the blackness of space was taken from the Gemini-7 spacecraft during the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's historic rendezvous mission. The two spacecraft are approximately 40 feet apart. This photograph was taken with a modified 70mm Hasselblad camera, using Eastman Kodak, Ektachrome MS (S.O. 217) color film. Aboard the Gemini-6 spacecraft were astronauts Walter M. Schirra Jr. and Thomas P. Stafford. Astronauts Frank Borman and James A. Lovell Jr. were in the Gemini-7 spacecraft.

This image, acquired by NASA's Terra spacecraft, is of the volcanic Ogasawara Islands. The islands were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, in recognition of an outstanding example of ongoing evolutionary processes in oceanic island ecosystems.

41D-33-071 (4 Sept. 1984) --- A collection of ice that developed around an external nozzle on Discoverys port side mid fuselage sails by the spacecraft on Sept. 4, 1984, following a successful attempt to remove the troublesome buildup using the remote manipulator system (RMS) arm. A crew member on the flight deck alertly grabbed a 70-mm camera and recorded the final look at the chunk.

SL3-130-3130 (July-September 1973) --- An excellent view of the southern aurora, luminous bands or streamer of light, in the Southern Hemisphere, as photographed from the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. The space station was moving into the sunlight when this picture was taken. This view is near the edge of the aurora cap. The surface of the Earth is in the foreground. The permanent aurora over the South Pole is in the background. Scientist-astronaut Owen K. Garriott, Skylab 3 science pilot, took this photograph with a hand-held 35mm Nikon camera, with a four-second exposure at f/1.2, using high-speed Ektacrome film. Because auroras are caused by solar activity, they occur at the same time in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

This movie was generated using imagery collected on Oct. 29, 2018, during Juno's 16th perijove (the point at which an orbit comes closest to Jupiter's center). Citizen scientists Gerald Eichstädt created this movie using data from the spacecraft's JunoCam imager. Movie available at

This is a photograph of the free-flying Solar Maximum Mission Satellite (SMMS), or Solar Max, as seen by the approaching Space Shuttle Orbiter Challenger STS-41C mission. Launched April 6, 1984, one of the goals of the STS-41C mission was to repair the damaged Solar Max. The original plan was to make an excursion out to the SMMS for capture to make necessary repairs, however, this attempted feat was unsuccessful. It was necessary to capture the satellite via the orbiter's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) and secure it into the cargo bay in order to perform the repairs, which included replacing the altitude control system and the coronograph/polarimeter electronics box. The SMMS was originally launched into space via the Delta Rocket in February 1980, with the purpose to provide a means of studying solar flares during the most active part of the current sunspot cycle. ISS035-E-029729 (26 April 2013) --- As seen through one of the windows in the Zvezda Transfer Chamber (the aft section of the service module), the Russian Progress 51 cargo craft approaches the International Space Station on April 26, 2013. The unmanned cargo vehicle minutes later successfully docked with the orbital outpost.

NASA image captured March 27, 2012 NASA successfully launched five suborbital sounding rockets this morning from its Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia as part of a study of the upper level jet stream. The first rocket was launched at 4 58 a.m. EDT and each subsequent rocket was launched 80 seconds apart. Each rocket released a chemical tracer that created milky, white clouds at the edge of space. Tracking the way the clouds move can help scientists understand the movement of the winds some 65 miles up in the sky, which in turn will help create better models of the electromagnetic regions of space that can damage man-made satellites and disrupt communications systems. The launches and clouds were reported to be seen from as far south as Wilmington, N.C.; west to Charlestown, W. Va.; and north to Buffalo, N.Y.

ISS028-E-017123 (16 July 2011) --- Separate atmospheric optical phenomena were captured in this electronic still photograph from the Inernational Space Station. The thin greenish band stretching along the Earth's horizon is airglow; light emitted by the atmosphere from a layer about 30 kilometers thick and about 100 kilometers in altitude. The predominant emission in airglow is the green 5577 Angstrom wavelength light from atomic oxygen atoms. Airglow is always and everywhere present in the atmosphere; it results from the recombination of molecules that have been broken apart by solar radiation during the day. But airglow is so faint that it can only be seen at night by looking "edge on" at the emission layer, such as the view astronauts and cosmonauts have in orbit. The second phenomenon is the appearnce of Aurora Australis.

Bowen, Hoburg, Alneyadi, and Fedyaev are returning after nearly six-months in space as part of Expedition 69 aboard the International Space Station.

AS11-37-5475 (20 July 1969) --- The black shadow of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM) is silhouetted against the surface of the moon in this photograph taken from inside the LM. The lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA) of astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. was conducted on July 20, 1969. Impressions in the lunar soil made by the lunar boots of the two astronauts are clearly visible.

Docking occurred at 2:14 p.m. (EST) on Feb. 26, 2011.

ISS043E249148 (05/23/2015) --- As the day begins on the International Space Station the cupola, the 360 degree view port's inner lights shine brightly while the sun begins its rise slowly on the Earth below. The cupola is a panoramic control tower for the station with windows through which operations on the outside of the station can be observed and guided. Through the robotics workstation, astronauts are able to control the space station's robotic arm, which helps with the attachment and assembly of various station elements, very much like the operator of a building crane. Spacewalking activities can also be observed from the Cupola along with visiting spacecraft and external areas of the station.
