CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- On Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a technician climbs into an environmental enclosure on space shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank. The enclosure will provide protection from wind, temperature and humidity changes while foam is re-applied and cured on the tank. The foam cracked during initial loading operations for Discoverys launch attempt on Nov. 5. The cracks are on one of the 108 stringers, which are the composite aluminum ribs located vertically on the intertank area. Discovery's next launch attempt is no earlier than Nov. 30 at 4:02 a.m. EST.

This image shows little foam loss from the tank except for one small divot near the triangular shaped bipod attach fitting. The divot posed no threat of damage to Discovery.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - The view from inside the mobile service tower at Space Launch Complex 2 on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California shows the Delta II interstage adapter, or ISA, for NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive mission, or SMAP, as it rises past the rocket's first stage already in position in the tower.Processing of the United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket that will loft SMAP into orbit is underway at the pad. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the Soft Capture Mechanism (SCM), part of the Soft Capture and Rendezvous System, or SCRS, moves above the floor via an overhead crane toward the stand holding the Flight Support System, or FSS,carrier where the SCM will be mated to the FSS. The SCRS will enable the future rendezvous, capture and safe disposal of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope by either a crewed or robotic mission. The ring-like device attaches to Hubbles aft bulkhead. The SCRS greatly increases the current shuttle capture interfaces on Hubble, therefore significantly reducing the rendezvous and capture design complexities associated with the disposal mission. The FSS will join the Multi-Use Lightweight Equipment, or MULE, carrier, the Super Lightweight Interchangeable Carrier and the Orbital Replacement Unit Carrier as payload on space shuttle Atlantis's STS-125 mission. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, 40-foot-diameter dish antenna arrays are being constructed as part of the Antenna Test Bed Array for the Ka-Band Objects Observation and Monitoring, or Ka-BOOM system. The antennas will be part of the operations command center facility. The construction site is near the former Vertical Processing Facility, which has been demolished. The Ka-BOOM project is one of the final steps in developing the techniques to build a high power, high resolution radar system capable of becoming a Near Earth Object Early Warning System. While also capable of space communication and radio science experiments, developing radar applications is the primary focus of the arrays.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - The replacement interstage adapter for the Boeing Delta II launch vehicle for the Deep Impact spacecraft is lifted up the mobile service tower on Launch Pad 17-B, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. Boeing workers will attach the adapter to the rockets center body section. Later the second stage, which was removed to allow access to the previous adapter, will be reattached. The first adapter was removed after it was found to be faulty during a review of launch vehicle hardware. Launch of Deep Impact is now scheduled no earlier than Jan. 12.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the tower of NASA's new mobile launcher, or ML, support structure is seen through its launch mount opening. It took about two years to construct the launcher in the Mobile Launcher Park site, north of the Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB.The 355-foot-tall structure will support NASA's future human spaceflight program. The base of the launcher is lighter than space shuttle mobile launcher platforms so the crawler-transporter can pick up the heavier load of the tower and a taller rocket. The next step will be to add ground support equipment, such as umbilicals and access arms, for future rocket launches.

The Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) for NASA's Space Launch System rocket arrives at the Delta Operations Center at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The ICPS was moved from the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Horizontal Integration Facility near Space Launch Complex 37 at the Cape. The ICPS is the first integrated piece of flight hardware to arrive for the SLS. It is the in-space stage that is located toward the top of the rocket, between the Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter and the Orion Spacecraft Adapter. It will provide some of the in-space propulsion during Orion's first flight test atop the SLS on Exploration Mission-1.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - At Launch Complex 17 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the second stage of the Boeing Delta II launch vehicle for the STEREO spacecraft is lifted into the mobile service tower. The stage has been returned to the pad after being tested for leaks in the High-Pressure Test Facility; no leak was observed. The stage will be remated with the Delta first stage. STEREO stands for Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory and comprises two spacecraft. The STEREO mission is the first to take measurements of the sun and solar wind in 3-dimension. This new view will improve our understanding of space weather and its impact on the Earth. STEREO is expected to lift off on Aug. 31.

The simulator was built at the Marshall Center for use in pathfinder activities, such as checking roadway clearances, crane capabilities and fits within structures. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The camera captures a unique view looking up into NASAs mobile launcher (ML) support structure at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A media event was held on the grounds to detail MLs use with NASAs Space Launch System (SLS) heavy-lift rocket, which will take astronauts into deep space on missions to asteroids, the moon or Mars. NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden and Center Director Bob Cabana also were in attendance for the event. It took about two years to construct the 355-foot-tall ML structure, which will support NASA's future human spaceflight program. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the transfer aisle of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the orbiter Atlantis hangs suspended vertically from an overhead crane. The 122-foot high orbiter is easily accommodated inside the 525-foot-tall, 518-foot-wide VAB. Atlantis will be mated with its external tank and solid rocket boosters before being transported to Launch Pad 39A. Atlantis will fly on mission STS-101 to the International Space Station, where its crew of seven will prepare the Station for the arrival of the next pressurized module, the Russian-built Zvezda. VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- On Space Launch Complex 576-E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a crane lowers NASA's Glory upper stack toward the Taurus XL rocket's Stage 0. The upper stack consists of Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the Taurus as well as the encapsulated Glory spacecraft. The Orbital Sciences Taurus XL rocket will launch Glory into low Earth orbit. Once Glory reaches orbit, it will collect data on the properties of aerosols and black carbon. It also will help scientists understand how the sun's irradiance affects Earth's climate. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, modifications continue to Firing Room 3 in the Launch Control Center, or LCC. Wiring and conduits below the floor have been upgraded and new flooring has been installed. Walls have been repaired and are in the process of being painted. Firing Rooms inside the LCC are being upgraded by the Ground System Development and Operations Program at Kennedy to support the processing and launch of multiple types of rockets and spacecraft, whether they are government or commercial models. Kennedys Launch Complex 39 is transitioning to support multiple users with the Firing Rooms being modified to be more generic in nature for upcoming programs.

VANDENBERG AFB, CALIF. - On the SLC-2 launch pad, the first half of the Delta II fairing for the Aqua-EOS satellite nears the top of the gantry. The Delta II will launch the Aqua-EOS satellite, one of a series of spacebased platforms that are central to NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE), a long-term study of the scope, dynamics and implications of global change. The Aqua program is composed of Aqua and other spacecraft (including Terra and Aura) and a data distribution system (ESDIS, and Mission Operations Center Implementation Team). Flying in an orbit that covers the globe every 16 days, Aqua will provide a six-year chronology of the planet and its processes. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A crimson and gold sunrise over the Central Florida coast begins illuminating Launch Pad 39A, where a water sound suppression test is to take place. This test is being conducted following the replacement of the six main system valves, which had been in place since the beginning of the Shuttle Program and had reached the end of their service life. Also, the hydraulic portion of the valve actuators has been redesigned and simplified to reduce maintenance costs. The sound suppression water system is installed on the launch pads to protect the orbiter and its payloads from damage by acoustical energy reflected from the MLP during launch. The system includes an elevated water tank with a capacity of 300,000 gallons. The tank is 290 feet high and stands on the northeast side of the Pad. The water is released just before the ignition of the orbiters three main engines and twin solid rocket boosters, and flows through parallel 7-foot-diameter pipes to the Pad are

Ground support equipment is secured in the well deck of the USS Anchorage at Naval Base San Diego in California. The equipment will be used during recovery of the Orion crew module after its first flight test. Before launch of Orion on a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, NASA, Lockheed Martin and U.S. Navy personnel will head out to sea in the USS Anchorage and the USNS Salvor, a salvage ship, and wait for splashdown of the Orion crew module in the Pacific Ocean. The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program will lead the recovery efforts. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A closeup of hub tiles replaced on space shuttle Discovery before its STS-119 mission targeted for Feb. 12. Hub tiles, heat protection tiles, are difficult to install because of their location on the inboard side of the inboard elevons. On the STS-119 mission, Discovery will carry the S6 truss segment to complete the 361-foot-long backbone of the International Space Station. The truss includes the fourth pair of solar array wings and electronics that convert sunlight to power for the orbiting laboratory.

Held in appendage deploy position, the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST's) high gain antenna (HGA) has been released from its stowed position along the Support System Module (SSM) forward shell. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Storm clouds move over Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, postponing the movement of the pad's rotating service structure away from space shuttle Discovery. The structure provides weather protection and access to the shuttle while it awaits lift off on the pad. RSS "rollback," as it's called, will begin again after the lightning-producing clouds pass. Launch of Discovery on the STS-133 mission to the International Space Station is set for 3:29 p.m. on Nov. 4. During the 11-day mission, Discovery and its six crew members will deliver the Permanent Multipurpose Module, packed with supplies and critical spare parts, as well as Robonaut 2, to the orbiting laboratory. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Workers watch as the fairing for Deep Space 1 is lifted on the Mobile Service Tower to its place on the Boeing Delta 7326 rocket that will launch on Oct. 15, 1998. The first flight in NASA's New Millennium Program, Deep Space 1 is designed to validate 12 new technologies for scientific space missions of the next century. Onboard experiments include an ion propulsion engine and software that tracks celestial bodies so the spacecraft can make its own navigation decisions without the intervention of ground controllers. Deep Space 1 will complete most of its mission objectives within the first two months, but will also do a flyby of a near-Earth asteroid, 1992 KD, in July 1999

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- Daylight glows from behind Space Shuttle Atlantis as it begins rollout to Launch Pad 39A for the second time. An attempt to roll out on Jan. 2 incurred a failed computer processor on the crawler transporter and the Shuttle was returned to the Vehicle Assembly Building using a secondary computer processor on the vehicle. Atlantis will fly on mission STS-98, the seventh construction flight to the International Space Station, carrying the U.S. Laboratory, named Destiny. The lab will have five system racks already installed inside the module. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Under evening cloud-filled skies, Space Shuttle Discovery remains on the pad two days after the Shuttles launch on Return to Flight mission STS-114 was scrubbed. The July 13 mission was scrubbed when a low-level fuel cut-off sensor for the liquid hydrogen tank inside the External Tank failed a routine prelaunch check during the countdown July 13, causing mission managers to scrub Discovery's first launch attempt. The sensor protects the Shuttle's main engines by triggering their shutdown in the event fuel runs unexpectedly low. The sensor is one of four inside the liquid hydrogen section of the External Tank (ET).

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the top of the 525-foot-tall Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB, is seen from the tower of NASA's new mobile launcher, or ML, support structure. It took about two years to construct the launcher in the Mobile Launcher Park site, north of the VAB.The 355-foot-tall structure will support NASA's future human spaceflight program. The base of the launcher is lighter than space shuttle mobile launcher platforms so the crawler-transporter can pick up the heavier load of the tower and a taller rocket. The next step will be to add ground support equipment, such as umbilicals and access arms, for future rocket launches.

SpaceXs Crew Dragon is guided by four parachutes toward the Atlantic Ocean on March 8 after returning from the International Space Station on the Demo-1 mission. N-243 Flight and Guidance Centrifuge Is used for spacecraft mission simulations and is adaptable to two configurations. Configuration 1 The cab will accommodate a three-man crew for space mission research. The accelerations and rates are intended to be smoothly applicable at very low value so the navigation and guidance procedures using a high-accuracy, out-the window display may be simulated. Configuration 2 The simulator can use a one-man cab for human tolerance studies and performance testing. Atmosphere and tempertaure can be varied as stress inducements. This simlator is operated closed-loop with digital or analog computation. It is currently man-rated for 3.5g maximum.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASAs Project Morpheus prototype lander soars 800 feet above the north end of the Shuttle Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on free flight test No. 15. During the 97-second test, onboard autonomous landing and hazard avoidance technology sensors, or ALHAT, surveyed the hazard field for safe landing sites, then guided the lander forward and downward to a successful landing.

The scientifically-themed Mars rover concept vehicle operates on an electric motor, powered by solar panels and a 700-volt battery. The back section opens and serves as a laboratory which can disconnect for autonomous research. While this exact rover is not expected to operate on Mars, one or more of its elements could make its way into a rover astronauts will drive on the Red Planet. The "Summer of Mars" promotion is designed to provide guests with a better understanding of NASA's studies of the Red Planet. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, the United Launch Alliance, or ULA, Atlas V rocket carrying NASAs twin Radiation Belt Storm Probes, or RBSP, is moved into the Vertical Integration Facility after rolling back from Space Launch Complex 41. The rocket and spacecraft will be secured and protected from inclement weather due to Tropical Storm Isaac. RBSP will explore changes in Earth's space environment caused by the sun -- known as "space weather" -- that can disable satellites, create power-grid failures and disrupt GPS service. The mission also will provide data on the fundamental radiation and particle acceleration processes throughout the universe. The launch is rescheduled for 4:05 a.m. EDT on Aug. 30, pending approval from the range.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The port booster for the United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy for Exploration Flight Test-1, or EFT-1, is being offloaded from the barge at the U.S. Army Outpost wharf at Port Canaveral in Florida and will be transported to the Horizontal Integration Facility, or HIF, at Space Launch Complex 37 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The upper stage and spacecraft adapter arrived with the booster and were transported to the HIF on May 6.At the HIF, all three booster stages will be processed and checked out before being moved to the nearby launch pad and hoisted into position. The spacecraft adapter will connect Orion to the ULA Delta IV, and also will connect Orion to NASA's new rocket, the Space Launch System, on its first mission in 2017.
