ISS014-E-13142 (31 Jan. 2007) --- Astronaut Michael E. Lopez-Alegria, Expedition 14 commander and NASA space station science officer, participates in the first of three sessions of extravehicular activity (EVA) in nine days, as construction continues on the International Space Station. During the 7-hour 55-minute spacewalk, Lopez-Alegria and Sunita L. Williams (out of frame), flight engineer, reconfigured one of two cooling loops for the Destiny laboratory module, rearranged electrical connections and secured the starboard radiator of the P6 truss after retraction.

JSC2008-E-018325 (27 Feb. 2008) --- Astronaut Gregory C. Johnson, STS-125 pilot, dons a training version of his shuttle launch and entry suit in preparation for a training session in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility at Johnson Space Center.

ISS016-E-026022 (30 Jan. 2008) --- The face of astronaut Daniel Tani, Expedition 16 flight engineer, is easily recognizable as he participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as maintenance and construction continue on the International Space Station. During the 7-hour, 10-minute spacewalk, Tani and astronaut Peggy Whitson (out of frame), commander, replaced a motor, known as the Bearing Motor Roll Ring Module (BMRRM), at the base of one of the station's solar wings. The BMRRM is part of the Beta Gimbal Assembly, which experienced electrical failures Dec. 8.

Astronauts Norman E. Thagard and Bonnie J. Dunbar in cosmonaut space suits in the Training Simulator Facility at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (Star City), near Moscow, Russia. In March 1995, astronaut Thagard is scheduled to be launched in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft with two cosmonauts to begin a three-month tour of duty on the Russian Mir Space Station. STS075-328-026 (25 Feb. 1996) --- Astronaut Claude Nicollier is the only clearly identifiable crewmember in this scene on the aft flight deck, captured during the busy chores associated with deployment of the Tethered Satellite System (TSS). The seven member crew was launched aboard the space shuttle Columbia on Feb. 22, 1996, and landed on March 9, 1996. Crewmembers were Andrew M. Allen, mission commander; Scott J. Horowitz, pilot; Franklin R. Chang-Diaz, payload commander; and Maurizio Cheli, European Space Agency (ESA); Jeffrey A. Hoffman and Nicollier, ESA, all mission specialists; along with payload specialist Umberto Guidoni of the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

Astronauts Frank L. Culbertson Jr., STS-51 mission commander, and Daniel W. Bursch, mission specialist, are seen on Discovery's flight deck. S85-30800 (14 April 1985) --- Astronaut Bruce McCandless II tests one of the possible methods of attempting to activate a switch on the Syncom-IV (LEASAT) satellite released April 13 into space from the Space Shuttle Discovery. The communications spacecraft failed to behave properly upon release and NASA officials and satellite experts are considering possible means of repair. McCandless was using a full scale mockup of the satellite in the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) mockup and integration laboratory.

STS081-E-05482 (16 Jan. 1997) --- Perhaps overwhelmed by a giant stock of supplies (out of frame, left), cosmonaut Aleksandr Y. Kaleri, Mir-22 flight engineer, ponders what parcel to transfer next from the Spacehab Double Module (DM) to the Russian Mir Space Station complex. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- STS-88 Mission Specialist Nancy J. Currie works on a foot restraint attached to the Unity connecting module, part of the International Space Station, in the Space Station Processing Facility at KSC. During the mission, the Unity connecting module will be mated to the Zarya control module, which will already be in orbit. The STS-88 crew is participating in a Crew Equipment Interface Test, which gives astronauts an opportunity for a hands-on look at the payloads on which they will be working while on orbit. STS-88 will be the first Space Shuttle launch for the International Space Station. Launch is scheduled for December 1998

S82-28454 (19 Feb. 1982) --- Astronaut Jack R. Lousma, right, STS-3 commander, and C. Gordon Fullerton, pilot, carry portable spacesuit air controllers as they walk from a transport van to Launch Pad 39A to participate in a simulated countdown and launch. This countdown demonstration test (CDDT) is part of the preparations for NASA s third orbital flight test in the space shuttle Columbia. The two are scheduled to spend a week orbiting Earth in Columbia this spring.

STS102-319-026 (8 - 21 March 2001) --- Cosmonauts Yury V. Usachev (left), Expedition Two commander, and Sergei K. Krikalev, Expedition One flight engineer, meet in the Destiny laboratory. Krikalev and two crew mates have just about completed their tour of duty on the International Space Station (ISS). Usachev is joined by two astronauts (out of frame) for several months' work and research on the outpost.

S90-45852 (29-31 July 1990) --- Susan J. Helms, one of 23 astronaut candidates who began a year's training and evaluation in July, participates in one of may sessions at a survival training course at Vance Air Force Base. This portion of the course is designed to familiarize the trainee with the feel of emergency ejection from a jet aircraft.

The jet-powered backpack can fly for 30 minutes and can be worn over normal clothing or spacesuit.

Endeavour pulled away from the complex at 2:05 p.m. (CST) on December 2, 2002 as the two spacecraft flew over northwestern Australia.

Dr. Merbold is SL-1 payload specialist representing the European Space Agency (ESA). S93-45726 (7 Oct. 1993) --- Canadian astronaut candidate Marc Garneau, later named as a mission specialist for NASA's STS-77 mission, participates in emergency bailout training at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Garneau was in the 1992 class of Astronaut Candidates (ASCAN). Wearing full parachute gear following a simulated parachute drop, Garneau has deployed a small life raft in a 25-feet deep pool in JSC's Weightless Environment Training Facility (WET-F). This portion of an astronaut's training is to prepare him or her for proper measures to take in the event of bailout over water. Garneau is assisted here by one of several SCUBA-equipped divers in the pool.

Expedition 8 Commander Michael Foale signs the inside of the Russian search and rescue helicopter as is tradition for returning cosmonauts, after he, Soyuz Flight Engineer Alexander Kaleri and European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers, of the Netherlands, landed in north central Kazakhstan, Friday, April 30, 2004, in a Soyuz TMA-3 capsule. STS106-301-018 (8-20 September 2000) ---Astronaut Scott D. Altman, pilot, translates through the tunnel to the International Space Station (ISS) witha new battery in hand. The seven-man STS-106 crew was in the process of a major moving effort of supplies and hardware from the Space Shuttle Atlantis to the station.

The Soyuz TMA-5 spacecraft is mated to its booster rocket in a processing hangar at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan Monday, October 11, 2004, in preparation for its rollout to the launch pad October 12 and its liftoff October 14 to carry Expedition 10 Commander and NASA Science Officer Leroy Chiao, Flight Engineer and Soyuz Commander Salizhan Sharipov and Russian Space Forces cosmonaut Yuri Shargin to the International Space Station.

Looking through the MQF window are astronauts Alan B. Shepard Jr. (left), commander; Stuart A. Roosa (right), command module pilot; and Edgar D. Mitchell, lunar module pilot. The crew men were brought to Houston aboard a C-141 transport plane from Pago Pago, American Samoa. The USS New Orleans had transported the crew to American Samoa from the recovery site in the South Pacific.

The wives are (left to right) Mrs. Pat Collins, Mrs. Jan Armstrong, and Mrs. Joan Aldrin. The crew of the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing mission remained in the MQF until they arrived to the Crew Reception Area of the Lunar Receiving Laboratory at the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC). The astronauts will be released from quarantine on Aug. 11, 1969.
