Grisaille Panel ca. 1265 French These grisaille panels are part of a set of eight once in three different chapels at the Norman residence of the French monarchs. They represent a mid-century transitional stage in royal French ateliers. The conventionalized acanthus buds are a continuation of earlier tastes, while the ivy leaves, delineated with hair-thin veins, reflect the newer, naturalizing tendencies. The castles in the border are devices of the kingdom of Castile and indicate royal patronage, probably that of Louis IX (1226-1272), who claimed the right to the Spanish throne through his mother, Blanche of Castile. Grisaille Panel 1270-80 French The artistry of this window derives from the contrast between the silvery effect of the grisaille decoration and the radiant colors of the bosses and borders. In addition, the graceful overlay of strapwork on spiraling vines with stylized leaves is enhanced by the bold outline of forms and the dense hatching of the backgrounds. The windows in the choir chapel at Sées originally consisted of band windows,” with colored figural glass in the central zones and grisaille panels above and below. The upper and lower panels are modern.. Grisaille Panel. French. 1270-80. White and pot-metal glass and vitreous paint, silver stain. Made in Sées, France. Glass-Stained

Spring. Culture: American. Dimensions: 52 5/8 × 30 in. (133.7 × 76.2 cm). Maker: Daniel Cottier & Company. Date: ca. 1873-85.The Aesthetic movement witnessed a revival of stained glass, primarily in the languid figural style associated with the English Pre-Raphaelites. The stained-glass artist Daniel Cottier was an important conduit for introducing this style to American audiences, and his New York studios, which opened in 1873, produced and marketed art furniture, upholstery, stained glass, and other decorative arts. In this allegory of Spring--from a series of the four seasons--a young woman stands barefoot with a newborn lamb in her arms. A gust of wind animates her light gown and flowing sash. The conventionalized yellow and gold leaves and the flowers in the small rectangular silver-stained panes surrounding the figure complement her gown's floral decoration, which is reminiscent of William Morris textiles. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
