In the entry for painted portraits, Diderot's Encyclopédie states that the principal merit of the genre is to render the sitter exactly, by capturing both his character and his physiognomy.1 A portrait bust of Diderot, believed to be the terracotta bust now in the Musée du Louvre, which served as a model for the Museum's marble version, was exhibited by the sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon at the Salon of 1771. A special veneration of reliquaries in the form of the heads of local saints developed in the Limoges region during the Middle Ages, a devotion that continues to the present day. Ivory figure probably representing the Maha Mudaliyar, head of the Porta in Sri Lanka. The Maha Mudaliyar formed the link between Dutch administration and the local population and played an important role in contacts with the Court of Kandy, including as an interpreter. It may be a portrait of Nicolas Dias Abayasinha Amarasekera. He was employed by Governor de Graaff from 8 March 1785 to his death in 1794. The man wears a tuppottiya (long cloth that is wrapped around the waist and legs several times) and a long European jacket with over the entire length The front a row buttons. Over his coat he wears a silk motif decorated sash from right to left. He wears his hair backwards in a kind of knot on his head. There are remains of polychromia, especially on the back of the head with black hair, red in the neck and gilding on tuppottiya. The man has wrapped a cloth around his right hand. The attitude of his left hand seems to indicate that he also holds something here.
