Cicada on a Grapevine late 14th century Bokurin Guan At the end of summer, the leaves of a grapevine have withered, its fruits have ripened, and a solitary cicada clings to the vine. This scroll was originally paired with a painting now in the collection of the Kyoto temple Honpōji that features a grasshopper, vibrant leaves, and darker fruits of a plant at peak ripeness. Grapevines, with their abundant, long-lasting fruit, are traditionally associated with fecundity and perpetuity.Little is known about the artist Guan but it appears that he was a Zen monk of relatively minor status. In this lyrical composition, his graceful, controlled handling of the brush and sharp eye for details in nature suggest that he was well trained in the art of monochrome ink painting.. Waka Poem with Printed Gold-and-Silver Underpainting of Cypress Fronds early 17th century Calligraphy by Hon'ami Ketsu Overlapping fronds of a cypress tree—whether woodblock printed or created with actual tree leaves remains to be determined—create a dramatic gold and silver background for a dynamically brushed waka (31-syllable court poem) in the distinctive style of Hon’ami Ketsu, one of the most highly regarded and influential calligrapher of the early seventeenth century. The first two Chinese characters reading “kono kawa (this stream) are boldly inscribed in highly cursive script in the first column and balanced with the character for yuki (snow) that floats atop the third column from the left. The dominant vertical stroke that punctuates the end of the poem on the far left is simply the kana shi , which is part of the verb ending rashi, indicating conjecture—yet, in this calligrapher’s brush it becomes an independent abstract shape. Plaque with robed priests leading animals ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This large plaque of ivory was probably blackened through exposure to fire when the palace complexes at Nimrud were sacked during the final defeat of Assyria at the end of the seventh century B.C. It depicts a procession to the right, with decorative borders at top and bottom in the form of stepped crenellations, which are projections that lined the tops of defensive walls. The figures lead animals as offerings, presumably to the Assyrian king and court. At the left edge is the head and forelegs of a horse, led by a bearded figure wearing an elaborate robe and rounded cap. Two cattle follow, a large bull and a smaller calf. They are led by another bearded and robed figure who grasps the ropes attached to the large bulls nose and the calfs horn. 4 of Horns, from The Cloisters Playing Cards ca. 1475-80 South Netherlandish The Cloisters set of fifty-two cards constitutes the only known complete deck of illuminated ordinary playing cards (as opposed to tarot cards) from the fifteenth century. There are four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols, based on equipment associated with the hunt, are hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. The value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which appear to be based on Franco-Flemish models, were drawn in a bold, free, and engaging, if somewhat unrefined, hand. Their exaggerated and sometimes anachronistic costumes suggest a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. Although some period card games are named, it is not known how they were played.
