The biblical characters Jael and Barak, flanking the mirror glass, appear in the book of Judges. The frame is surmounted by a figure of Charity; animals, mythic and actual, symbolizing the Four Continents, occupy the corners (from upper left): a griffin representing Africa, a basilisk representing America, a stag representing Europe, and a camel for Asia.. Date: 1647.While there is a long tradition of exceptional professional embroidery in England, domestic needlework attained a high point in the seventeenth century, when it was a requisite skill of accomplished young women. In addition to clothing and accessories, mirror frames, writing boxes, table covers, and pictures were decorated with embroidery. Prints served as sources for figures, flowers, and animals, which were drawn onto the fabric and given to the embroideresses. Seasons and Elements (Air) (set of four) ca. 1683 Attributed to Charles Le Brun French Representing spring and summer, fire and air, these hangings (MMA 46.43.1-.4) were part of a larger set that must also have included the two missing seasons and elements. This series included portraits of Louis XIV, his mistress Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart, marquise de Montespan (1641 - 1707 ), and six of their children, all shown as deities. The hangings were probably worked at the convent of the Filles de Saint-Joseph in Paris, which was under the patronage of Madame de Montespan, and where she retired in 1691. At this religious community, orphan girls were educated in the art of needlepoint, and a number of royal embroidery projects for use at Versailles were executed there, with the additional assistance of professional embroiderers. Door 1745-1755 Italy. First sparked by the accounts of Marco Poloís 13th-century voyage to China, the Italian vogue for chinoiserie (Chinese-inspired motifs) was later reinforced by the Venetian Republicís extensive trade with the East. The city-stateís aristocrats ordered entire rooms to be decorated in Chinese style. One palace on the Grand Canal, the CaíRezzonico, now a museum of decorative arts, was lavishly decorated by the Rezzonico family after they purchased it in 1750. In addition to commissioning the painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico to create frescoes for the ceilings, the Rezzonicos followed contemporary fashion by decorating at least one room with Orientalist motifs.This door from the palace depicts two scenes that provide glimpses of Western perceptions of the East. Hunting with a Hawk (from the Hunting Parks Tapestries) ca. 1515-35 South Netherlandish This tapestry belongs to a larger set of four, featuring activities that take place within and around an enclosed hunting park. Here, hawking is the focus. At center, a youth sits astride a rearing horse while he watches his falcon bring down a bird. The folded back wings of the falcon are precisely observed, and capture the bird at the end of its dive.
