Basket, 20th century, 131/16 x 1 1/8 x 1 1/8 in. (20.8 x 2.9 x 2.9 cm), Natural plant fibers, United States, 20th century, In the early 1900s, many Euro-American women traveling through the Southwest region of the United States became infatuated with miniature Native American baskets, and some became avid collectors. Native women basket makers responded to this demand by creating ever-smaller baskets, utilizing the same harvesting, processing, and coiling techniques as those for personal use. Creating tightly woven, tiny baskets in an expanding range of designs and styles for their new clientele required the same levels of expertise and knowledgebut perhaps even more dexterity and skill.

The trips covered American Indian territories, New England, Asia, India, Great Britain, and all of Eastern and Western Europe. The seven expeditions between 1917 and 1928 were specifically focused on collecting regional textiles and costumes from Eastern and Western Europe and, to a lesser extent, New England. Culin's goals for these trips were not just to expand the Museum's holdings, but also to preserve their cultural contexts. He did so through amassing photographs, notebooks, and ephemera which documented the social, commercial, and cultural circumstances surrounding their ac

Glove ca. 1600 British This luxurious, unmatched glove features a complex design embroidered in silver, gilded silver, and colored silks. The wide, tabbed gauntletsedged with metallic lace and sequinsdepict a hatted man, accompanied by a small dog, kneeling and aiming his gun at a deer. Teeming with natural elements, the other tabs present a serpent shimmying up a stalk, crenelated buildings, cattails, and sea-monsters undulating from below. These natural and supernatural symbols were popular embellishments for housewares, costume, and accessories, as can be seen in a portrait of Ellen Maurice (2017.249), where she holds a glove richly embroidered with gold serpents. This arrangement of symbols may suggest protection from something uncertain. The serpent was understood as a sign of wisdom or prudenceand sea monsters could emblemize danger or the unknown. It is, however, difficult to determine the precise meaning of the scene; the embroidery could represent a personal device or a sha

Pincushion, 20th century, 7 7/8 x 7 1/2 x 1 7/8 in. (20 x 19.05 x 4.76 cm) (without dangles or hanger), Beads, cotton, sequins, paper, United States, 20th century, Iroquois women made lavish pincushions that sat on Victorian dressing tables where they held long hatpins. Others hung on walls to hold pins and needles used while women sewed. Victorian women were drawn to these innovative pieces because of their rich colors and ornate floral beadwork. In the late 19th century, Tuscorora and Mohawk women, building from traditional designs, created a new raised style of beadwork found on many whimseys. Often these artists used white crystal glass beads in combination with other colors to give contrast and texture to the flowers, leaves, and berries that adorn many pieces.

Necklace (lei niho palaoa) Early 19th century Hawai'i The pronounced upward curve of this whale ivory pendant is likely a stylized reference to a tongue. Its incorporation into the necklace signals the importance of oratory in chiefly pursuits. The crescent-shaped form, a design vital to embodying the divine, also acted as a counterpoint to the crested helmet that protected the head of the chief. Cords of intricately plaited human hair suggest a genealogical link between high-ranking chiefs and their ancestral gods.. Necklace (lei niho palaoa) 313842
