Portrait of a Man Frans Hals (Dutch, ca. 1580-1666). Portrait of a Man, ca. 1614-1615. Oil on canvas, 29 x 21 3/4 in. (73.7 x 55.2 cm). In this painting by Frans Hals, an unidentified, well-to-do man holds a miniature portrait of a woman, perhaps his wife or fiancée. The hand holding the miniature appears to extend through the simulated oval frame and into the viewers own space, an effect known as trompe loeil (fool the eye). The loose and bold brushwork for which Hals is known—especially evident in the mans lace collar and hair—greatly influenced a number of nineteenth-century artists including Giovanni Boldini, whose painting is on view nearby. Wallpaper Panel 1700-1730 This wallpaper panel is part of a set originally consisting of seventeen pieces (see 14.106.1-.16 for set.). The panels depict mountain landscapes, scenes with houses, birds, and flowering shrubs. They were hand-painted in China during the early eighteenth century for export to England. There, as in America, such exotic wallpaper enjoyed a vogue among the fashionable gentry. Considered a great luxury, it added richness and colors to walls. In these two paintings, Abigail Pickman and Elizabeth Goldthwaite sat for their marriage portraits. As was typical of upper-class white women in the colonial United States, they likely did not control how they were represented in these images, which were intended to project the familys stability and wealth. Before the American Revolution, the Boston painter John Singleton Copley was the most sought-after artist in the country. Copleys portraits, highly regarded for their skillful rendering of luxurious items such as silks and pearls, were synonymous with the tastes of the eighteenth-century social elite, both in the United States and England. Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Zenobius, John the Baptist, Reparata and John the Evangelist, mid 14th century. Tempera and tooled gold on panel, 77 1/2 x 39 1/2 in. (196.9 x 100.3 cm). In 1348, the bubonic plague killed more than half the population of Florence, causing profound social, economic, and psychic devastation. In the plagues aftermath Nardo di Cione painted this large altarpiece, likely for the Duomo, the most important church in the city. There is a red and white banner near Jesus, who holds a bird in his hand; both are symbols of the Resurrection, his future triumph over death. For devout Christian survivors of the pandemic, this would have been a powerful image of salvation. Panel fragment 16th century Spanish, Seville Polychrome tiles had long been made in Spain in the cuerda seca (dry cord) technique, dating to the Muslim Almohad dynasty, in which colors were kept from running together during firing by a line of grease drawn between them. This method was not always successful, however, as the blurred outlines in some of these tiles indicate..
