Fragment of a tunica with tabula and clavus. Linen fragment of a tunica with woven tabula and clavus in black. The clavus has a decoration of animals, O.A. Running and jumping lion, a floating figures a bird couple used from each other. The clavus ends in a drop shape. In the Tabula a circle in which a figure dancing with crossed legs with veil above the head (Nereïde), As well as some animals W.O. A running lion and a hose. On the top a thicker weft and a woolen dark brown weft and is a part of a self-side. This may indicate a neck cutting. On the left side, a tissue fragment is said to be mounted for the most part below the large fragment. Remnants of a similar fragment are located on the right side.

Textile with a Pattern of Stars and Birds, Originally from a Cap 11th-12th century This textile was part of a cap, whose paper lining (46.156.11b) shows words of an inscribed text. The style of this script appears to be connected with the Ayyubid, late Fatimid or early Mamluk periods, while the silk samite technique is attributed to Seljuq Iran. The weavers employed two warps and two or more wefts to create the silk textile called samite. Here, eight-pointed stars, diamond-shaped motifs with foliate endings, and confronted birds compose the textiles intricate pattern. This object was owned by Giorgio Sangiorgi, an Italian textile collector who had also inherited his father antiquarian activity at Palazzo Borghese in Rome. In 1946, it was acquired together with large part of his collection by his friend and dealer Adolfo Loewi, who sold it to the Metropolitan.. Arcades containing hunters on horseback recall Roman sources, while the roundels with angels are clearly Christian. Similar imagery, such as the baskets of fruit, is found on the wall paintings of Umayyad desert palaces in Syria.Early textiles such as this, woven by Coptic Christians, have survived the centuries due to the dry climate and the Christian perpetuation of the Egyptian practice of burying the dead in garments sometimes shrouded in large cloth wrappings. Element from a Stalactite Squinch (Muqarnas) 10th century Probably originally part of a muqarnas, or stalactite squinch, this and other muqarnas elements would have been stacked, in descending size, in the upper corner of a room in order to make the transition to a dome. This, together with objects 38.40.249-38.40.251 are among the earliest known examples of muqarnas, a feature that became quite popular in Islamic architecture in subsequent centuries. In the main chapel are frescoes depicting the Nativity, the Death of Mary and the Assumption, all of which are attributed to Francesco Cozza or to Antonio Carracci. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Panels from a Funerary Couch (Guanchuang) 520 CE-530 CE China. These stone panels were originally assembled to enclose the back and short sides of a low, couchlike platform that held a coffin in a tomb. This ìfunerary couchî was probably supported along the front and back by two long stone slabs, each elevated on rectangular feet. Such a coffin platform may also have been partially enclosed in front by two stones carved to resemble gate towers, making the couch resemble the walled enclosure of a villa or a city.The original order of the Art Institute stones is not certain. Their present sequence is based on their relative lengths and pictorial compositions as well as on the alignment of the iron hinges. The left and right stonesóone including a bullock cart, the other a horse with decorative trappingsómay each have formed one short side of the funerary couch.
