Inlay, floral, sema-tawy 100 BC-100 AD Ptolemaic Period-Roman Period A mosaic glass technique allowed multiples of an image to be created: a figural or design composition was made by bundling colored glass canes, which were then drawn out into a long bar like this partially preserved example. The bar was then sectioned at right angles, probably by striking the bar with appropriate tools, to produce small inlay tiles. Chasuble Fragment 14th century This fragment is likely from a lavish textile either a chasuble or a reliquary cloth used in the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Chur, Switzerland where its sister fragment is preserved in the Cathedrals treasury. It is a highly luxurious fabric woven with fine silk and silver-gild metallic thread. Calligraphic golden bands with scrolling vine-leaves in the back - some of which end in animal heads - are woven against a purple-blue satin ground. They alternate with bands decorated by quatrefoil medallions in crimson red surrounded by fantastic beasts, such as dragons and griffins. While the repeated inscribed words in Arabic of ‘al-Sultan al-Malik [al-Nasir suggest an attribution to Mamluk Egypt under Sultan al-Malik al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun (r. ca. 1293-1342), the animals and script also resemble those found in the eastern Islamic Lands, where under the Il-Khanids sophisticated textiles were woven as gifts for their Mamluk rivals. Coptic Textile Fragment late 3rd-5th century Textiles like this one are thought to have been produced by Copts (Christian Egyptians) and other weavers throughout the Byzantine Empire. The designs and motifs of Coptic and Byzantine textiles influenced the visual repertoire of the early Islamic period. This fragment was probably part of the shoulder decoration of a tunic, the quintessential garment of the Late Antique world. The people of late antiquity were also buried in these garments, and most surviving examples have been found in cemeteries. This example contains a large eight-pointed star formed by overlaid squares filled with sprouting urns, vine scrolls, and geometric interlaces motifs also seen in Byzantine floor mosaics.. Fragment of a wood-block print on linen, 1200s - 1300s. Egypt, Mamluk period, 1200s-1300s. Block printing on linen tabby ground; overall: 15.3 x 17.2 cm (6 x 6 3/4 in.). The Indian technique of patterning a textile by printing with wooden blocks came to the Mamluk world as a result of trade with India. At Fustat, outside of Cairo, numerous fragments of Indian and Mamluk printed textiles have been found. Fish, repeated to form the entire design of this textile, were an indigenous Egyptian motif. The break in the bodies of two of the fish reveals that two blocks were used to print each fish.

Barred (), Multicolor appliqué and embroidered, with a pattern of a hilly landscape with buildings with domes and trees in midfield. Fringe - with lacunes - and lined with blue cotton. The central representation is caught in a wide edge with a narrow edge on either side with a pattern of switched ellipses. The presentation in midfield includes a hilly landscape upholstered with buildings with domes and trees. Along both slopes of the hill and the center of buildings with domes that are placed parallel to the uprising scalloped stroke. Above a piece of red velvet, which is faced in a continuation of the scalloped stroke that has a bulge at the top. The wide edges are decorated with similar hills with buildings with domes and trees. With the exception of the narrow intermediate edges, the fond is largely covered with small embroidery stitches in gold and silver thread.

The standing winged creature seen here is known as the nineheaded Bes figure, a divine protector of the birth of the king and of the sun. This form of Bes was closely associated with the evening and the night part of the solar cycle. He thus also played an important role as guardian of sleeping women and children, particularly against the dangers of the night, represented here by the noxious creatures contained in the oval upon which he stands. 5 of Collars, from The Cloisters Playing Cards ca. 1475-80 South Netherlandish The Cloisters set of fifty-two cards constitutes the only known complete deck of illuminated ordinary playing cards (as opposed to tarot cards) from the fifteenth century. There are four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols, based on equipment associated with the hunt, are hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. The value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which appear to be based on Franco-Flemish models, were drawn in a bold, free, and engaging, if somewhat unrefined, hand. Their exaggerated and sometimes anachronistic costumes suggest a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. Although some period card games are named, it is not known how they were played. Almost all card games did, however, involve some form of gambling. The condition of the set indicates that the cards were
