Hieratic ostracon with a list of workmen's names ca. 1295-1070 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside Ostraca (plural for ostracon) are potsherds used as surfaces on which to write or draw. The term is used, by extension, to refer to chips of limestone, which were employed for similar purposes. Despite their humble appearances, ostraca bear a wide range of images and texts, including administrative documents, literary texts, and depictions of royal and divine figures. The texts were mostly written with reed pen and ink of two colors, red and black, and inscribed in Hieratic, the cursive script of ancient Egypt throughout most of its periods. The entire Tipitaka Pali canon of Theravada Buddhism is set on 729 marble slabs, each with 80 to 100 lines of text, originally in gold ink, on both the obverse and the reverse sides. Each stone is three and a half feet wide, five feet tall and five inches thick and housed in a kyauksa gu or a small cave-like stupa. Kuthodaw Pagoda, literally meaning Royal Merit Pagoda, and formally titled Mahalawka Marazein, is a Buddhist temple and stupa located in Mandalay, central Burma. It lies at the foot of Mandalay Hill and was built during the reign of King Mindon (180878). The stupa itself, which is gilded above its terraces, is 57 m (188 ft) high, and is modelled after the Shwezigon Pagoda at Nyaung-U near Bagan. In the grounds of the pagoda are 729 'kyauksa gu' or stone-inscription caves, each containing a marble slab inscribed on both sides with a page of text from the Tipitaka, the entire Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. Kunyu Wanguo Quantu (輿萬國全圖) was printed by Matteo Ricci upon request of Wanli Emperor in Beijing, 1602. Ricci's Chinese collaborators were Zhong Wentao and Li Zhizao. The map was crucial in expanding Chinese knowledge of the world. It was later exported to Japan and was influential there as well.

Only a part of the decorative edge, two cartouches, one with portrait of Queen Elizabeth (originally in the middle) and to the right of it a representation of a traditional costume with the text 'Nobilis femina Angliae'. On either side of Elisabeth, two text blocks with 'Typus' and 'Angliae' underneath, on a nautical instrument there is 'Jodocus Hondius Fecit in 1590'. In the 90s of the 16th century, J. Hondius made maps of England, France and the Low Countries. These cards are the oldest examples of maps with border decorations, an art form that came to full development in the 17th century. This map is based on the map of England and Wales by Christopher Saxton (1579) and served as an example of a rare map of England, published in Cologne by Peter Overradt and engraved by Conrad Goltzius. Tiraz Fragment dated A.H. 266/A.D. 879-80 Derived from the Persian word for embroidery, the term tiraz specified textiles inscribed with good wishes, the date and place of manufacture, and the name of the ruler who ordered the fabric in order to make robes of honor to present to his courtiers. Nine-Panel Buddhist Monks Vestment (Kujō kesa) with Lotus Arabesque late 17th-mid 18th century Japan The transmission of the Buddhist masters vestment (kesa) to the disciple represents the transmission of the dharma (teaching), especially in Zen Buddhism. The only person able to recognize that the disciple is on the way to enlightenment (or has reached it) is the master, who has already experienced it. Kesa are treasured and associated with those who wore or owned them. Small, rectangular pieces of fabric are joined together to form one kesa. Many robes have been created from cut-up religious offerings, reflecting the idea that what is worthless in the secular world translates into the sacred in the Buddhist realm..
