Two men engaged in fisticuffs cause consternation to those nearby. The titles of dramas lettered on playbills comment on the fracas. Point of Honour and Peeping Tom, on a sheet in the left foreground, suggest the cause of the fight and draw attention to a man in striped trousers looking up a womans dress. A second handbill, at the right, lettered The Devil to Pay and Love, Law and Physic, hints at the trials of sitting in the pit and suggests the low taste of the audience since the latter farce was characterized by Cockney humor.. Behind them a fence with behind it the smiling audience spread over three rows. Above them a balcony or lodge with two men and two women, the linker of which is an orange saleswoman. A standing woman in the audience attracts the jacket of the Lord in the lodge to offer a basket of oranges. The first edition was designed and engraved by William Hogarth and appeared in 1733. This colored print with caption is a later pressure from approx. 1761.
