Manchu Nobleman's Semiformal Insignia Surcoat (Gunfu), 1736-1795, L.52-3/4 in., Silk tapestry (kesi), China, 18th century, Members of the nobility wore insignia surcoats over dragon robes during formal court ceremonies. These surcoats were dark, full-length gowns decorated with dragon roundels in accordance with the rank of the owner. Because all four of the upper roundels in this robe have front facing, five-claw dragons with shou roundels above their heads, the coat undoubtedly belonged to an emperor.

Manchu Woman's Semiformal Court Robe (jifu), 18th-19th century, 55in x 66in, Silk tapestry (kesi), China, 18th-19th century, Silk tapestry, or k'o-ssu, was a technically demanding weave admired by the Chinese for its lightness and clarity of pattern. Unlike the case in continuous weft brocade, each color area had to be woven from a separate bobbin. This made the finest k'o-ssu, like this robe, extremely time consuming to produce as well as expensive. Woven gowns as intricate as this, and fully embroidered robes, could take professional weavers between one and two years to fabricate.

Robe for Tibetan aristocrat (chuba) 18th century Tibet In addition to bolts of cloth, court robes were often sent from China to Tibet in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries where they were refitted into a style of dress worn by lay aristocrats. Close examination of the dragons on the upper part of this robe reveals that parts of their bodies do not match precisely, which suggests that this garment was either made from a larger one or pieced together from different robes. Emperor's twelve-symbol festival robe. Culture: China. Dimensions: Overall: 56 5/8 x 63 1/2 in. (143.8 x 161.3 cm).Official costumes in imperial China were highly regulated, and the decorative motifs of court outfits were specific to rank. Among the emblems used on the emperor's ceremonial robes were the twelve imperial symbols, as seen on this example: the sun, the moon, constellations, mountains, a pair of dragons, birds, ritual cups, water weeds, millet, fire, an ax, and the symmetrical fu symbol. These symbols, said to have been used since ancient times, represent the emperor's righteous rule over the universe. Manchu Woman's Unofficial Informal Robe, Guangxu period, 1875-1908, L. 54 1/2 in., Silk tapestry (kesi) and embroidered satin, China, 19th-20th century, This richly decorated special occasion gown features a scattered scheme of flowers and animals. Peonies, orchids, plum and peach blossoms, magnolia, lotus, chrysanthemum, and morning glory flowers combine with cicadas against a green background. The cuffs feature sprays of multicolored seasonal flowers while the inner cuff bands and borders display crane roundels alternating with bats (representing happiness) against a dark blue ground. This robe symbolizes the classic Chinese ideal of harmony with nature. The floral imagery represents seasonal change with the specific flowers signifying different months of the year. The cicada, which emerges in spring to complete its life cycle, suggests renewal and regeneration. Together, the insects and flower promote the ideal of a harmonious coexistence of all living things.

This tunic is one of four in the Museum's collection said to be from Akhmim, an ancient weaving center and apparently a center of both pagan and Christian thought and religion. Dress identification has always been strong among the Yao and the womenfolk are totally responsible for the creation of the ceremonial dress worn on special occasions by their families. Styles of dress will vary within the various subgroups and from village to village. However, all Yao women wear an indigo tunic, trousers, and elaborate head cloths. Nearly all special occasion wear incorporates sophisticated silk embroidery and appliqué work. Tunic, c. 1900, 40 3/4 × 54 3/4 in. (103.51 × 139.07 cm), Cotton, Togo, 19th-20th century, Whoever wore this cotton tunic, more than a hundred years ago, was a member of the military nobility of the West African Anufo people. Verses from chapters 5 and 38 of the Quran, and invocations of God the Merciful, inscribed on the garment by a Muslim cleric, offered fortitude and protection. Blocks of wavy lines around the shoulders look like Arabic letters but are not readily legible. They form a repetitive script, possibly a supernatural language invoking the assistance of jinn, spirits that, according to the Quran, God created of 'smokeless fire.
