They are typically decorated with embroidery and eye-catching fabrics. This jinbaori is painted with a large, writhing dragona motif not often found on surcoats. Surcoat (Jinbaori) 17th century Japanese A high-ranking samurai would have worn a jinbaori like this over his armor for protection against the elements and as a display of his status and his mon (family crest). The mon on the back of this example, three oak leaves within a circle, belongs to the Makino family, who were daimyo (feudal lords) of Tanabe (modern day Kyoto Prefecture). Jacket. Culture: Hungarian. Date: 1840-70.This vest represents virtuosic surface decoration, incorporating many different materials and techniques. The colors, though faded with age would have been striking combined with the reflective surfaces of the mirrors. Mirrors have traditionally been used as talismans to ward off evil spirits, but also add to the overall brilliance of this garment. The region of Transylvania, in the eastern part of the Carpathian Basin is currently part of Romania, however in the 19th century when this garment was made it was under the control of the Kingdom of Hungary. This object was collected by Stewart Culin (1858-1929) during a collection expedition in 1921. Culin was the Brooklyn Museum's first Curator of Ethnology, serving from 1903 to 1929. Possessing an insatiable curiosity and appetite for collecting objects of all kinds, Culin conducted over twenty worldwide collecting expeditions between 1901 and 1928. Woven of heavy goat wool and hair, it enfolded the wearer in its warmth and shielded him from the elements in the Atlas Mountains. The large orange shape on the back symbolizes a dramatic eye, meant to protect the wearer from the harmful forces of the evil eye. Belief that someones malicious glare has the power to cause misfortune or injury is widespread among Mediterranean cultures.

Dolman. Culture: American. Date: ca. 1875.This dolman is made from a fine quality Indian shawl which is sewn to shape with beautifully symmetrical seaming and a well placed border. The theme is carried into the interior with an elaborate paisley patterned silk lining making this truly a luxury item. In the 1870s shawls lost popularity due to its immense size and the reducing expanse of skirts to help support them. Although some were retained as heirlooms, others were stitched into the more wieldy shape of the mantle. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Tunic. Dimensions: 66.5 in. high 55.00 in. wide (169 cm high 140 cm wide). Date: probably 5th century.Tunics, usually worn in layers, were the standard dress of the Mediterranean world. Officials, nobles, and well-to-do citizens wore long ones with expansive long sleeves. The outer garment was embellished with woven, ornamented medallions and bands, called clavi. Here, dancing warriors possibly associated with Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, decorate the squares. Vine leaves and interlace patterns decorate the clavi. Woman's Robe Made 1840-1869 Uzbekistan. This womanís robe exemplifies the long tradition of ikat production in Central Asia, specifically, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, once an active center along the ancient Silk Road. Among the many uses of ikats was their role as a component of a womanís dowry. A woman would have worn this robe at weddings and other special occasions, and at her funeral it would have been draped over her bier. The choice of fabric was determined by a womanís age and status. In general, young women wore bright colors and large patterns, while older women dressed in more sober hues. Most women wore garments made of inexpensive native cotton fabrics, but wealthy women owned robes made of silk and cotton-wefted ikat fabric. Ikat is an ancient technique involving precise and repeated tying (binding) and dyeing of threads or yarns before they are woven. Campaign vest (jinbaori), 19th century, Unknown Japanese, 37 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. (95.25 x 62.23 cm), Paper, wool, silk, metallic thread, Japan, 19th century, In earlier times, samurai wore jackets and trouser suits made from richly colored and patterned silk, beneath relatively little armor. But in the 16th century the style of armor changed to cover more of the body, and these elaborate undergarments were concealed. As a result, high-ranking lords began to wear surcoats over their armor. These garments were often made of luxurious, sometimes imported materials. Flamboyant designs and glaring color choices signaled the rank and identity of the wearer and created an imposing appearance on the battlefield.

Informal Womens Kimono. The patterns on this kimono were applied to the fabric using stencil printing. This new way of dyeing fabric was simple, quick, and cost efficient. The geometric patterns in a contemporary art-deco style were ideally suited for the rapid production of prêt-à-porter-kimonos.
