Chasuble, c 1600- 1700. Italy, Genoa, 17th century. Woven polychrome silk and gilt metal threads, cut and uncut velvet; overall: 106 x 68.3 cm (41 3/4 x 26 7/8 in.). This sumptuous polychrome velvet displays a central vase with abundant flora and exotic leaves flanking curving blossoming fronds on a gilt-metal thread ground. The pattern was created with five colors of cut and uncut (loops) velvet pile. Only the pile warps for the lush green velvet occur across the entire cloth, while each additional color appears in vertical stripescrimson, peach, rose, and purple. These widely acclaimed velvets from Genoa were the most colorful woven in Europe. Both the long stole and the shorter maniple are insignia of the office of deacons, priests, and the higher clergy. Silk Fragment with Wavy-vine Pattern on Green Ground 16th century Spectacular, large-pattern silks were favored materials for luxury garments among the courtly elite of sixteenth-century Istanbul, and were often used for the bold, richly colored kaftans of the Ottoman sultans. This rectangular silk fragment features a design of red undulating vines bearing rosettes, on a gold-green ground. A series of small rosettes of gold, blue, green, and yellow fill each vine, and larger rosettes punctuate the vine. Fragment from an apron (opreg cu ciucuri) Romanian, Banat area late 19th century This woven fragment belongs to the upper part of an opreg cu ciucuri, a fringed apron traditionally worn by women from the Banat area of Romania and Serbia. The warp of the fragment's ground woven component is made of course, long wool fibers from the back of Turcana sheep. Highly twisted during spinning and dying, these fibers give desirable weight and stiffness to the apron. Embroidered sampler. Culture: Dutch, Marken Island. Dimensions: 17 7/8 × 12 1/4 in. (45.4 × 31.1 cm). Date: 17th century.This sampler, which features various geometric motifs, and an alphabet, is typical of Marken Island samplers, which are characterized by bands of colorful patterns. Girls stitched these bands to practice patterns for "vernaaide linten"- ribbons that were attached to a cap and which were an important part of the costume tradition on Marken Island. These ribbons consisted of black embroidery on white linen. The women of Marken are said to have kept their samplers in or near their kitchens for handy reference, so much of the needlework appears darkened from residue from cooking fires. Samplers from this area, including this one, often include striped horses. Other motifs include a ship, dog in a house or other enclosure, and striped rooster. The initials "LP," which are stitched several times, are probably the initials of the sampler's maker. Museum: Metropolitan Museu

Carpet with a Compartment Design first half 16th century This magnificent jewel-colored carpet, with its elegant, curvilinear "compartments" based on a geometric star pattern, is filled with creatures borrowed from Chinese art, such as the dragon and phoenix in combat. The benevolent phoenix has its counterpart in Persian lore, where it is known as the simurgh, also a wise and protective bird. Other compartments contain decorative arrangements of Chinese ch'i-lin and flying geese, as well as the purely Islamic arabesque. The border with its medallions and cartouches reflects those of Safavid bookbindings, which also make great use of ribbonlike Chinese cloud bands, by now thoroughly assimilated into Persian art. With its fine weave (550 knots per square inch), silk foundation, and the close relationship between its elaborate pattern elements and the art of the book, it seems likely that this carpet was designed in the book atelier working in the service of the shah.This carpet has been

Towel border 1840-70 Russian This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.Kilim or split tapestry is a hand weaving technique most usually used to produce heavyweight rugs. Date: first half 19th century.Admired for their deep, rich hues and the strength of their design, the textile arts of the Turkmen weavers combine a stark, dramatic beauty with absolute functionality. The seasonal migrations of the Turkmen tribes require that their every possession--even their homes--be collapsible and portable. This large, knotted-pile textile, similar in most respects to a carpet, likely served instead to cover the entrance to a Turkmen tent. Such tent door hangings, called ensi, with their thick, densely knotted pile, not only protected the family from the outside elements, but also added further color and comfort to an interior living space already replete with soft carpets, cushions, and laden storage bags. Ushak Medallion Carpet on White Ground first half 17th century Medallion Ushak carpets usually have a red or blue field decorated with a floral trellis or leaf tendrils, central medallions, and a border containing palmettes on a floral and leaf scroll, and pseudo-kufic characters. In this example (partially restored), a typical white-ground field pattern is combined with the Medallion Ushak to form a new category of Ottoman carpets. Its triple spots-and-wavy double stripe pattern, called çintamani, appears frequently in Ottoman art from the sixteenth century on tiles, paintings, book bindings, and particularly on textiles and garments. Unlike other white-ground categories, this field pattern never appears in European paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.. Towel early 19th century Russian This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.Towels such as this were often given as wedding gifts and used in religious ceremonies to hang over mirrors and sacred trees. Towel Made 1401-1500 Perúgia. This complete towel entered the collection in 1899. The design is formed of addorsed and confronted animals specifically to be identified as wyverns. According to The Oxford English Dictionary a wyvern is a ìchimerla animal imagined as a winged dragon with two feet like those an an eagle, and a serpent-like barbed tailî. It is the same animal which one also finds, however, with its wings spread, in the lower part of the Borghese coat-of-arms. Towels of this kind can be found in Early Renaissance paintings and manuscript pages where they were used either as table covers or as overtowels..
