Hanging () Fragment late 16th-17th century Peruvian This lively and colorful fragment was once part of a large, tapestry-woven table cover, bed cover, or wall hanging. Its size, proportions, and basic organization may have been similar to the large Peruvian tapestry with figurative scenes in the collection of the Metropolitan (56.163). The composition of the fragment consists of a series of major and minor borders, separated by guard stripes. Throughout, red is the predominant color; this is typical of Andean textiles both before and after the sixteenth-century Spanish invasion, and was probably achieved through the use of dye extracted from cochineal, an indigenous American insect. Off-white, yellow, blue, green, and purple also appear. Hip cloth with birds and floral motifs in Batik, Anonymous, Before 1940 Rectangular cotton cloth, both of which are not surrounded by short sides (meant to be sewn into a tube). The colors of the cloth are natural, light brown, red, dark blue and black. Motives have been applied by means of Batiktechniek. The two ends of the cloth have a red background with slender motifs, a row of tumpals and loose floral patterns in natural, red and dark blue. The rest of the cloth has a dark blue background with motifs (plant and bird motifs in natural, light brown and black. The edges of this midfield have a rank motif on red background. Textile with a Pattern of Stars and Birds, Originally from a Cap. Dimensions: Textile: H. 5 in. (12.7 cm)W. 5 1/4 in. (13.3 cm)Mount: H. 7 3/4 in. (19.7 cm)W. 12 3/4 in. (32.4 cm) D. 7/8 in. (2.2 cm). Date: 11th-12th century.This textile was part of a cap, whose paper lining (46.156.11b) shows words of an inscribed text. The style of this script appears to be connected with the Ayyubid, late Fatimid or early Mamluk periods, while the silk samite technique is attributed to Seljuq Iran. The weavers employed two warps and two or more wefts to create the silk textile called samite. Here, eight-pointed stars, diamond-shaped motifs with foliate endings, and confronted birds compose the textile's intricate pattern. This object was owned by Giorgio Sangiorgi, an Italian textile collector who had also inherited his father antiquarian activity at Palazzo Borghese in Rome. This piece exhibits the use of jufti (or paired) knotting, characteristic of a small group of carpets and carpet fragments attributed to the northeastern Iranian province of Khurasan. Picchwai for the Festival of Cows. Culture: India, Deccan, Aurangabad (). Dimensions: 97 5/8 x 103 1/8 in. (248 x 262 cm). Date: late 18th century.Large painted cloths (pichhwais) were made to hang behind the main image in a temple. This textile was produced for the Festival of Cows (Gopashtami), which occurs in the late autumn to celebrate Krishna's elevation from a herder of calves to a cowherd. Note the range of cows and frolicking calves that populate the flower-strewn field. The indigo ground and extensive use of gold and silver are typical of pichhwais that were made for a community of Sri Nathji devotees who moved to the Deccan during this period.
