In this MODIS image from NASA's Aqua satellite, the eye of Typhoon Soudelor is seen over northwestern Taiwan on August 8, 2015 at 05:25 UTC (1:25 a.m. EDT). At that time, Soudelor had maximum sustained winds near 90 knots. It was less than 100 miles southwest of Taipei, Taiwan. Typhoon-force winds were felt up to 35 miles from the center, covering a 70 mile-wide diameter.

Typhoon Neoguri, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Florita, was a large and powerful tropical cyclone which mainly struck Japan in 2014. The eighth named storm and the second typhoon of the annual typhoon season, Neoguri developed into a tropical storm on July 3 and then a typhoon on July 4

The MODIS instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite captured Typhoon Neoguri in the East China Sea at 05 00 UTC (1 00 AM EDT) on July 8, 2014. Typhoon Neoguri hit Japans Okinawa islands on Tuesday local time (July 8, 2014), bringing high winds, huge waves and storm surges. Neoguri packed sustained winds of 175 kilometers (108 miles) per hour with some gusts up to 250 kph (154 mph), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Zoe was estimated to be one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record within the Southern Hemisphere. The system was first noted on December 23, 2002 as a tropical depression that had developed, within the South Pacific Convergence Zone to the east of Tuvalu. Over the next couple of days the system moved south-westwards and crossed the International Dateline early on December 25. After this the system became better organized and was declared to be a tropical cyclone and named Zoe later that day; it became a Category 5 tropical cyclone

ISS024-E-014559 (14 Sept. 2010) --- Hurricane Igor is featured in this Sept. 14 image photographed by an Expedition 24 crew member on the International Space Station. At the time this image was taken, Hurricane Igor was about 648 miles east of Barbuda Island in the Lesser Antilles. It was travelling to the northeast (290 degrees) at 6.2 mph (6 kts). The winds were already 132.5 mph (115 kts) gusting to 161.3 mph (140 kts) and forecast to intensify. Igors well-defined eye was a dynamic area of swift rising winds in the outer wall and sinking winds in the center. His strong eye wall surrounded a low level cloud deck of clouds containing additional vortices.

Typhoon Ma-on, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ineng, was a large and powerful typhoon that affected southern Japan in July 2011. It was the sixth named storm and second typhoon of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season. Originating from an area of low pressure near Wake Island on July 9, the precursor to Ma-on gradually developed as it moved westward. Maximum sustained winds were near 225 km/hr (140 mph) and the storm's minimum central pressure was down to 942 millibars

Typhoon Chaba was the strongest tropical cyclone in the western Pacific during 2004 and caused a swath of damage from the Mariana Islands to Japan from August through September of that year. Chaba was the Japan's second costliest storm during the season, only behind Songda in September, and peaked as a typhoon with maximum sustained winds equivalent to that of a Category 5 on the SaffirSimpson hurricane wind scale.

NOAA's GOES-East satellite captured this visible image of Hurricane Joaquin east of the Bahamas on Oct. 3 at 1615 UTC (12 15 p.m. EDT). The national weather forecast for October 3, 2015 Joaquin is no threat for now, but the nor'easter on the East Coast is causing massive flooding. Heavy rain hit Charleston, South Carolina., and much of the Southeast on Saturday, giving the region little relief from the threat of Hurricane Joaquin as it moved to the northeast away from the East Coast.

The MODIS instrument on NASA's Terra satellite captured Typhoon Neoguri in the Pacific Ocean at 02 05 UTC (10 05 PM EDT) on July 6, 2014. Typhoon Neoguri is expected to reach Okinawa early Tuesday, bringing sustained winds of 198 kilometers (123 miles) per hour and gusts up to 270 kph (168 mph), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The storm could be one of the strongest to hit Japan in decades, generating waves up to 14 meters (46 feet) high.

Hurricane Frances

Hurricane Joaquin continued to intensify in the Bahamas on October 1 and NASA and NOAA satellites have been providing valuable data on the storm. NASA's GPM and Terra satellites and NOAA's GOES-East satellite provided rainfall, cloud extent, cloud height and other data to forecasters. Joaquin became a major hurricane today, October 1, reaching Category 3 status on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale. On October 1 at 1330 UTC (9 30 a.m. EDT) NOAA's GOES-East satellite captured this visible image of Hurricane Joaquin covering the southern Bahamas and extending over southeastern Cuba, and the island of Hispaniola (which includes Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Joaquin's eye had become completely visible now that the storm had reached Category 3 status. Double Cyclone Strikes Philippines

At 19 36 UTC (3 36 p.m. EDT) on June 26, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite provided a visible-light image of Hurricane Dora. The VIIRS imagery showed a small hurricane with a visible pinhole eye surrounded by a thick band of powerful thunderstorms. That strength didn't last long as Dora moved over cooler waters and began to weaken early on June 27. Dora appeared degraded in satellite imagery as strong convection and thunderstorms were diminishing, although the storm still maintained a visible eye. At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) on Tuesday, June 27, Dora's maximum sustained winds have decreased slightly to near 75 mph (120 kph) with higher gusts. Dora is a small tropical cyclone, as hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center. Soggy winters are not unusual in the United Kingdom, but this winter has been in a category of its own. UK Met Office meteorologists had just declared January 2014 the wettest month on record for parts of southern Britain when another series of storms swept across the area in early February. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite captured this image of an extratropical cyclone bearing down on the United Kingdom on February 12, 2014. Mature extratropical cyclones often feature comma-shaped cloud patterns that are the product of “conveyor belt” circulation. While heavy precipitation is often present near the low-pressure head of the comma, a slot of dry air usually trails the west side of the tail. The storm brought the United Kingdom yet another round of heavy rain, as well as winds that exceeded 160 kilometers (100 miles) per hour. At the time, Matthew had top sustained winds of about 230 kilometers (145 miles) per hour. Earlier on October 4, temperature data collected by MODIS on NASA’s Aqua satellite revealed that the cloud tops around Matthew were very cold (at least -57° Celsius, or -70° Fahrenheit). Cold cloud tops are known to produce heavy rainfall. NOAA's GOES-14 satellite captured a visible image of a low pressure area that will affect the Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley and northeast over the next couple of days. The low pressure area, the rounded area of clouds near southern Louisiana, is now moving in a northerly direction from the Gulf coast, and will track northward to the Great Lakes, passing west of the Mid-Atlantic region and bringing clouds and showers. It's associated warm front will also move up the U.S. East coast bringing a surge of warmth before a cold front sweeps in from the west. The clouds draped across the Mid-Atlantic today, Oct. 1, are from an area of low pressure and trailing frontal boundary located over the Atlantic Ocean just off the North Carolina coast and stretching back to the Gulf low. The image was created at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. by the NASA GOES Project.

NOAA's GOES-East satellite provided a visible-light image of Tropical Storm Harvey; August 30, 2017 at 7:30 a.m. EDT, after it made landfall at 4 a.m. CDT just west of Cameron, Louisiana. The widespread and catastrophic effects of Hurricane Harvey resulted in one of the costliest natural disasters in United States history. An estimated 300,000 structures and 500,000 vehicles were damaged or destroyed in Texas alone. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimated total damage at $125 billion, with a 90% confidence interval of $90-160 billion. The scope of flooding in areas with low National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) participation lends to the large uncertainty in the damage total. This ranks Harvey as the costliest tropical cyclone on record in the country alongside Hurricane Katrina in 2005

iss056e162178 (Sept. 12, 2018) --- Cameras outside the International Space Station captured a stark and sobering view of Hurricane Florence the morning of Sept. 12 as it churned across the Atlantic in a west-northwesterly direction with winds of 130 miles an hour. The National Hurricane Center forecasts additional strengthening for Florence before it reaches the coastline of North Carolina and South Carolina early Friday, Sept. 14.

Although there's only one formed tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Hurricane Cristobal, there are three other developing areas of low pressure and all were captured in this panoramic image from NOAA's GOES-East satellite today at 8 a.m. EDT. Cristobal is a hurricane located east of the U.S. East coast and is forecast to move up toward eastern Canada tonight (and stay off-shore). The image was made at NASA's GOES Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Low #1. A weak area of low pressure near the coast of South Texas is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Significant development of this system is unlikely before it moves inland over South Texas and northern Mexico today. ISS009-E-18178 (11:58:05 GMT, 13 August 2004 ) --- This panoramic view of Hurricane Charley was photographed by the Expedition 9 crew of the International Space Station earlier this morning at a vantage point just north of Tampa, Florida looking southward. At 9 a.m. (EDT), about an hour after this photo was taken, Charley was reported to be about 75 west of Key West, moving north at 18 mph. Peak winds were estimated to be 110 mph. The small eye was not visible in this view, but the raised cloud tops near the center coincide roughly with the time that the storm began to rapidly strengthen today.

Over the weekend of Oct. 5 and 6, Typhoon Phanfone's center made landfall just south of Tokyo and passed over the city before exiting back into the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. NASA's Aqua satellite captured a picture of the typhoon as Tokyo braced for its large eye. On its way to mainland Japan, Phanfone struck Kadena Air Base on the island of Okinawa. According to the website for U.S. Air Force Kadena Air Base ( a href= http //www.kadena.af.mil rel= nofollow www.kadena.af.mil /a ), "One Airman is confirmed deceased and two more are missing after they were washed out to sea from the northwest coast of Okinawa at about 3 45 p.m. Oct. 5. An Airman that was found by the Japanese Coast Guard and pulled from the sea was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. HH-60s from Kadena Air Base and Japanese Coast Guard are continuing to search for the remaining two Airmen. Rough seas are complicating rescue efforts." The storm's eye appears in the center of the frame. Gonzalo hit Bermuda on the following day, as a powerful Category 2 storm, with winds estimated at 110 miles per hour.

The storm was bearing down on the Philippines with winds of 135 miles per hour. Meteorologists are predicting that the storm will make landfall on Mindanao in the early morning of Dec. 4 local time, as either a category 4 or 5.

Ita officially made landfall at Cape Flattery about 9 00 p.m. local AEST time as a Category 4 storm according to reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer that flies aboard Aqua captured an image of the Category 4 storm on April 11 at 12 00 a.m. EDT (4 a.m. UTC). Satellite imagery indicates the eye is 9.2 miles wide (8 nautical miles, or 14.8 km). Warnings and watches remain in effect as the center of Ita is expected to remain at hurricane strength as it moves in a southerly direction, staying just west of Cairns over the next day.
