Several members of the American Legion Department of Idaho spent their Veterans Day properly disposing of close to 5,000 American flags by holding a ceremony and respectfully burning the flags. During the ceremony, Idaho National Guards trumpet player from the 25th Army Band, Sgt. 1st Class Michael Robinett, performed Retreat to lower and retire the first tattered flag at the beginning of the ceremony. He played Taps to honor and respect the flag as it was burned. Robinett then performed To the Colors for a new flag, as it was raised and displayed.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- "The National 9/11 Flag" is raised in the Rocket Garden at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. The contributions of NASA, Kennedy Space Center and the state of Florida were stitched into the fabric of the American Flag, which was recovered near ground zero following the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The "New York Says Thank You Foundation" is taking the flag on a cross-country journey to be restored to its original 13-stripe design using pieces of fabric from American flags destined for retirement in all 50 states. Once the flag is restored, it will become a permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial Museum being built at the World Trade Center site.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Honor guards march to the Astronaut Memorial Mirror at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to participate in a U.S. Honor Flag presentation ceremony. The flag is presented to NASA to be prepared to fly aboard space shuttle Atlantis on the Space Shuttle Program's final mission, STS-135. The U.S. Honor Flag has been flown nationwide, at Ground Zero and throughout the world to honor heroes who have lost their lives while serving their community and country, including police officers, firefighters, members of the Armed Forces and astronauts. More than 100 honor guard members traveled to the Space Coast to take part in the ceremony. After the flag returns to Earth, it will continue as a traveling memorial.

For the members of the Idaho Patriot Guard Riders Memorial Day is a weekly remembrance. The Patriot Guard Riders are a national organization with state chapters spread out in regional areas. The PGR creed is simple - Standing for those who stood for us. In Idaho, the PGR is often present at the committal services for active duty members of the military, members of the Idaho National Guard, and Veterans that take place at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in the foothills of Boise and communities throughout Idaho.
