The construction area for a future transient training brigade headquarters in the 1600 block on the cantonment area is shown Dec. 9, 2022, in snowy conditions at Fort McCoy, Wis. A contract, totaling $11,964,432.87, was awarded June 9, 2022, to L.S. Black Constructors to build the fiscal year 2022 Transient Training Brigade Headquarters project at Fort McCoy. Construction operations began in August 2022. Location of construction is just across the street from where the same contractor has been building two new transient training troop barracks buildings in the same block. Engineers with the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) discuss the condition of the upstream gate on the John Day Dam navigation lock, located on the Columbia River near Rufus, Oregon, July 26 in between inspections of the gate after it malfunctioned due to a broken guide wheel. While the Corps works to fix the 215,000-pound vertical lift gate, its continuing to pass vessels through the lock using a floating bulkheada wall that can be moved in and out of place with a tugboat and essentially used as a temporary gate. Currently, vessel lockages, which typically take about 45 minutes, are taking twice as long. The guide wheels, two of which are attached to each side of the gate, act as rollers that keep the gate aligned as it moves up and down through its normal range of motion during lockages.

The Louisiana National Guard continues to work around the clock assisting local officials in the ferrying of equipment and construction of a levee of HESCO walls on Avoca Island to protect Morgan City and the surrounding area from high river water, Jan. 11, 2016. The barrier will be used in the construction of a 2-mile long levee to prevent backwater flooding from reaching Morgan City and other towns in South Louisiana due to high river levels.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At the turn basin in the Launch Complex 39 Area of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the barge carrying a girder for a new mobile launcher is moved closer to the ramp. The new mobile launcher will be the base for the Ares rockets to launch the Orion crew exploration vehicle and the cargo vehicle. The base is being made lighter than space shuttle mobile launcher platforms so the crawler-transporter can pick up the added load of the 345-foot tower and taller rocket. When the structural portion of the new mobile launcher is complete, umbilicals, access arms, communications equipment and command/control equipment will be installed.

Soldiers with the 716th Engineer Company, an Army Reserve engineer company based in Summersville, N.H., work at the base operations support site troop project at Fort McCoy, Wis., on Aug. 17, 2022, by moving fill dirt from the site. The 716ths Soldiers were at Fort McCoy to be a part of the Army Reserves and 86th Training Divisions Combat Support Training Exercise 86-22-02. The 716th was the fourth unit of 2022 to complete some work at the project and the sixth since 2021 when the project began. The site plan is to make it into a base operations support site for installation service contractors, such as facility maintenance, roads and grounds, solid waste, custodial, pest management, and more.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - The newly shod Crawler Transporter leaves tracks in the dirt as it moves forward on its road test. The Crawler Transporter that will move Space Shuttle Discovery to the launch pad for Return to Flight is taking its first road test following the replacement of all its shoes. The crawlers have 456 shoes, 57 per belt (8 belts in all). Each shoe weighs 2,200 pounds. Cracks appeared in the shoes in recent years, spurring a need for replacement. The new manufacturer, in Duluth, Minn., has improved the design for a safe Return to Flight and use through the balance of the Space Shuttle Program.

A crane is attached to the Crew Access Arm and White Room for Boeing's CST-100 Starliner spacecraft to be attached to the Crew Access Tower at Cape Canaveral Air Force Stations Space Launch Complex 41. When attached to the 200-foot tall Crew Access Tower, the arm will serve as the connection that astronauts will walk through prior to boarding the Starliner spacecraft when stacked atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. This installation completes the major construction of the first new Crew Access Tower to be built at the Cape since the Apollo era. Under a Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) contract with NASA, Boeings Starliner system will be certified by NASA's Commercial Crew Program to fly crews to and from the International Space Station.

Transportation specialists with the Fort McCoy Logistics Readiness Center Transportation Division and Soldiers with the 107th Support Maintenance Company of the Wisconsin National Guard unload Army vehicles and equipment July 20, 2022, at Fort McCoy, Wis., from railcars on the cantonment area at the installation. Soldiers with the 716th Engineer Company, an Army Reserve engineer company based in Summersville, N.H., work at the base operations support site troop project at Fort McCoy, Wis., on Aug. 17, 2022, by moving fill dirt from the site. The 716ths Soldiers were at Fort McCoy to be a part of the Army Reserves and 86th Training Divisions Combat Support Training Exercise 86-22-02. The 716th was the fourth unit of 2022 to complete some work at the project and the sixth since 2021 when the project began. The site plan is to make it into a base operations support site for installation service contractors, such as facility maintenance, roads and grounds, solid waste, custodial, pest management, and more.

Contractors perform various earth work activities while preparing the ground at the site of the new Louisville VA Medical Center Jan. 25. Construction is scheduled to be complete in 2026.
