A little girl attempts to carry a pile of enormous books past a baby sleeping in a cradle. The books, some of which look like hollow shells, topple onto the floor. Date: circa 1890

The caption for this illustration that dates to around 1865 reads: All the attention of the little fair-haired boy appeared absorbed by a copy-book, in the leaves of which he was arranging some plants and flowers. The scen in is a poor village in Sweden in November in 1719. The boy is Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist. Engraving depicting a young girl using a poster to help teach a poor boy learn the alphabet.

Making beaver hats, 1750. Although called beaver, little or no beaver fur was used. According to quality, nap on felt fabric was made of mixtures of beaver, musquash or rabbit fur, and cotton wool, and was bowed into condition by man at right. Felt base was softened in the 'kettle' and the nap then applied. Mercury was used during manufacture and the fumes inhaled by the men round steaming 'kettle'. Many hatters suffered from the uncontrollable shaking typical of mercury poisoning which damaged the central nervous system. The Mad Hatter in 'Alice in Wonderland' exhibited these symptoms.
