Professors Ayrton and Perry's new electric railway, exhibited at the Crystal Palace Electric Exhibition in 1882. Ayrton and Perry met at the Imperial College of Engineering and Japan and together invented a wide of range of electrical devices. Engraving showing the relics of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated Arctic expedition of 1845, which were found by Francis Leopold McClintock in 1859. The items include Sir John Franklin's chronometer, a sextant, a loaded gun, a knife initialled with 'W.R.' and a copy of the 'Vicar of Wakefield'. In 1845 the British Admiralty sent two polar exploration ships, HMS 'Erebus' and HMS 'Terror', to look for the Northwest passage round the northern coast of Canada. The expedition, commanded by Sir John

Cooke & Wheatstone's double needle telegraph. The letters of the alphabet and a variety of conventional signals; were indicated by single and combined movements of the galvanometer needles. The operator worked the instrument by manipulating the two handles at the bottom and an alarm bell was housed in the upper casing and was used to signal the beginning of a message.

Pound Lock. The vessel has entered pound from lower level on left, the gate has been closed behind it and water is being allowed to flow through gate on right, gradually raising the water level so that the boat can float out. Pound locks are used on canals, or to transfer vessles from one waterway to another at a different level. Lord Rosse's 72 inch (1.8m) reflecting telescope, 1849. William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse (1800-1867) Irish astronomer and engineer, built the then largest telescope on his estate at Parsonstown, Ireland. With it he discovered 15 spiral nebulae, and named the Crab nebula. From his paper 'On the Construction of Specula Mirrors of Six-feet Aperture ...' from 'Philosohical Transactions of the Royal Society', (London, 1849). Engraving.
