Refrigerator "Economic" from Switzerland, Cabinet from behind without apparatus.

Square Piano ca. 1801-5 Caspar Katholnik (Katholnig) Austrian This unsigned piano is attributed to the Viennese maker Caspar Kaholnik because of its similarities to an instrument by that maker located in the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest. Katholnik was born in Villach (Beljak), Carinthia, Austria, and moved to Vienna where he received a license to make instruments in 1801, becoming a citizen of the city a year later. In addition to square pianos, he advertised upright pianos, but none is known to survive. Technical description: Rectangular mahogany veneered case with canted corners and black edges, on 4 square, tapered legs bearing black striping along corner edges, nameboard decorated with fretwork pattern of intersecting arches; compass: FF-f3 (61 keys), bone naturals with 3 reddened score lines, ebony slips over dark-stained accidental blocks; dampers operated by knee lever (missing); small oblong and later oblong pierced tuning pins; German action with escapement, metal kap

Square Piano ca. 1815 Thomas Loud Evenden British This is the oldest extant piano by Thomas Loud Evenden, the venerable Philadelphia piano maker who would later be a founder of Loud & Brothers. Technical description: Rectangular mahogany veneer case on integral table stand with 3 drawers (center one concave) over turned and reeded legs with brass claw feet; lid not hinged to spine, but composed of four hinged panels plus fall board, the narrow third panel from the front dowelled to case sides, the rear panel having 3 recessed sections formerly covered with cloth; compass FF-c4 (68 keys), ivory naturals with molded fronts, ebony accidentals; pedal mechanism missing (raised dampers by lifting hinged back rail of keyframe, raising key tails); iron oblong unpierced tuning pins; lowest 20 strings on separate bridge; thick (5 cm) spine; English double action with intermediate lever and escapement; dampers (missing) on rods running through a drilled batten alongside the nut, to rest on blocks

Filing cabinet (cartonnier) (part of a set) ca. 1770 attributed to Joseph Baumhauer French This filing cabinet is made by the French cabinetmaker Joseph Baumhauer, who also created the matching writing table in the museums collection (1979.172.2). Known as cartonniers or serre-papiers, filing cabinets were separate pieces intended to be placed on the table. Decorated on the sides and top with floral marquetry, the cabinet is a trapezoidal structure with a slightly concave front. It rests upon four short tapering cabriole legs mounted with gilt-bronze mounts in the shape of scrolled acanthus leaves. The front two doors are fitted with wire mesh and open up to reveal seven compartments arranged in three tiers. Pierre Verlet has suggested that separate filing cabinets eventually gave way to the fall-front secretary (see for example 1977.1.14), a type of furniture that afforded greater privacy by allowing the user to lock away personal papers from prying eyes..
