The United States Arrives In Southampton After Record Atlantic Crossing -- The liner, United States comes in to dock at Southampton last night. In background a plane is seen flying over, and at left is one of the escorting tugs. The American liner, United States, docked at Southampton last night from Le Havre and received a terrific welcome from other ships and the crowds on the Quayside. The United States beat the Queen Mary's record for the Atlantic crossing by just over 10 hours, doing the trip in 3 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes, an average speed of 35.59 knots. July 9, 1952. The well known liner Monowai yesterday underwent extensive ocean going trials after her 2 years and 2 months refit. Of 10,852 tens it is expected that she will shortly re-enter the Tasman run.The Menowai is owned by the Union Steamship Co and is shown on her return from the trials. December19, 1948. A Steamer Launched In A Gale -- A new 15, 000-ton steam ship met her first gale a minute after she was launched on the Clyde at Glasgow. She is the British India Steam Navigation Company's Uganda and she is pictured here as she is swept broadways across the river by the first 'big blow' of the gales that swept Scotland with winds up to 65 and 120 miles per hour. Just as the Uganda glided down the skipway, winds caught her. The tugs had not yet linked up. She was blown, bow first, back on to the end of the launching ways and remained jammed in the position for 20 minutes before being freed. January 16, 1952. (Photo by Reuterphoto).

The British liner Athenia, 13,465 tons (top right), was torpedoed and sunk yesterday 250 miles west of Inishtrahull Island, off the northern Irish coast, while on her way from Liverpool to Montreal, Canada. She carried 1,400 persons, of whom 314 were citizens of the United States. It is reported that all on board, excepting those killed by the explosion, have been picked up. The new 53,000-ton American liner United States wrested the blue riband from the Queen Mary when she sailed into Le Havre this afternoon after her record. Breaking trip across the Atlantic of three days, to hours and 40 minutes. With an average speed of 35.59 knots, she cut off 10 hours, two minutes from the Queen Mary's record made in 1938. An aerial photograph of the United States taken today between Alderney and Cape Hague. America's new 53,000-ton liner United States passed the Bishop Rock in a fierce gale at 6.16 a.m. today to win the Atlantic Blue Riband from the Queen Mary. She had made the Transatlantic crossing in 3 days, ten hours forty minutes, ten hours and two minutes faster than the record held by the Queen Mary. World's Largest Post-War Liner at Southampton - The 'Caronia', largest liner built in the world since the end of the war, passes the old 'Aquitania' as she arrives here after her week-end cruise from Gourock, Scotland. Among her passengers was the Duke of Edinburgh.The liner, 34,000 tons, was launched at John Brown's yards at Glasgow by Princess Elizabeth in 1947. December 20, 1948.

The liner 'Madonna' of the Compagnie Francaise de Navigation a Vapeur Cyprien Fabre & Compagnie. The funnel pattern dates this card to between 1905-1915, when the Fabre Line was running Transatlantic cargo-passenger lines. Madonna was launched in 1905, transferring to the West Africa service in 1927. Date: circa 1910

Built in 1912 for the Hamburg-American Line as 'Imperator', the 'Berengaria' suffered a fire in her main lounge in 1938 and, though the damage was not considered great at first, she was sold for scrap in New York later that year.
