Alternating rows of flower petals and blossoms, leaves, berries, and blue faience beads were sewn to a papyrus backing, and linen ties secured the collar around the wearer's neck. Some of the flora used in the Tutankhamun collars have been identified as olive leaves, cornflowers, and poppies. Brigandine Plate 1400-1450 Italian This is part of a large find of medieval armor discovered in 1840 in the ruins of the fortress of Chalcis, on the Greek island of Euboea (then a Venetian colony called Negroponte). The fortress had been captured and destroyed by the Turks in 1470. Now divided largely between the Ethnological Museum, Athens, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chalcis hoard contains many rare and unusual elements of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century armor. Of particular importance are the variety of headpieces and the many fragments of brigandines (armor for the torso constructed of small plates riveted to layers of fabric), some of which retain portions of their original velvet covering. The Chalcis armor provides a unique picture of the armament used in the Aegean, one of the easternmost military outposts of the Venetian empire.. Brigandine Plate 27665

Left Gauntlet ca. 1485-95 probably Austrian, Innsbruck The long, slender cuff is semicircular in section and has a low medial ridge; its upper edge is obliquely cut on the inner side, with turned edge, to facilitate the bending of the elbow. A plate to cover the inside of the lower arm was formerly attached to the cuff by hinges and a strap and buckle (one of the hinges and the buckle remain). The two holes at the top of the cuff allowed the gauntlet to be attached directly to the cowter (elbow cop). The back of the hand is covered by five metacarpal plates, the upper two embossed over the ulna, and an embossed knuckleplate connects the metacarpal lames to the five finger lames of mitten type. The base of the cuff is decorated with V-shaped flutes radiating upward, the area between them filled with a diamond-shaped panel embossed in low relief; V-shaped flutes radiate in a downward directiona cross the back of the hand and fingers. Concho Belt 1880-1890 New Mexico. During the 1860s and early 1870s, Navajos (DinÈ) learned silversmithing from Hispanic artisans in New Mexico, and Plains Indian craftsmen whose own metalwork stemmed from Colonial sources in the eastern United States. Mexican pesos, U.S. American dollars, and ingot silver were melted down and recast in molds carved from soft volcanic tufa. Navajo silversmiths employed steel tools and punches to develop decorative patterns. Early concho belts, bow guards, bracelets, necklaces, horse headstalls, and other items of silver jewelry display massive forms and simple ornamentation. By the 1890s turquoise was increasingly used; although most turquoise was obtained from Southwestern sources, some was imported from China and Iran. Hat -

Bandolier Bag, c. 1830-1850, 44 3/4 x 11 3/16 in. (113.67 x 28.42 cm) (including strap and fringe), Cotton, wool, beads, United States, 19th century, This is a rare bag: Only two other examples are known to still exist. It was made by finger weaving, a technique that resembles braiding and does not require a loom. Its one of the oldest forms of weaving, and is still used by some Native American artists. The artist strung independent threads with beads, then wove them together to create zigzagging lines and patterns. Its not a fast process, which may be one reason so few weavers use the technique today, though it has been revived by cultural ambassadors.
