Shawl 1865-75 Scottish This is a very nice example of the best of the shawls that were woven in Paisley, Scotland. It shows how the cone shape of the original Indian and Persian shawls metamorphosed into elegant European arabesque forms. Although this is a very European design it still maintained the harlequin fringe gates of the original style.The shawl held a place as a high fashion accessory for a relatively large period between the end of the 18th century to the 1870s. These accessories were originally adopted by men with exposure to India and Persia through the Trading Companies. The changing fashions near the end of the 18th century brought a renewed interest in Indian and Persian shawls as a form of warmth over the thin muslins of fashionable Empire silhouette dresses. Sleeved Tunic, 1460s-1532. Central Andes, central coast, Chancay people. Cotton, camelid fiber; length back of neck to hem: 40.6 cm (16 in.); width across shoulders: 128.9 cm (50 3/4 in.). The Chancay people of Perus central coast created one of the ancient Andes best-known textile legacies—artistically elaborate tunics and loincloths worn by men, womens dresses and head cloths, and shawl-like mantles. Two traits indicate that this tunic is a high-prestige garment: its labor-intensive tapestry technique and its copious use of alpaca fiber, imported from the adjacent highlands and here dyed in a pleasing pink-and-gold palette.

Two Beaded Panels, late 1800s. Northeast Woodlands, Great Lakes Region, Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) or Nehiyawak (Cree) People. Glass beads on wool; overall: 38.1 x 10.8 cm (15 x 4 1/4 in.). In the 1800s, native peoples began to use European fabrics to fashion fine formal garments; they favored sturdy cloth, such as velvet and wool broadcloth, which provided support for heavy decorative beadwork that was added by hand. Often the fabric was a dark color, providing dramatic contrast for the multicolored beads. Rather than encrusting the entire garment, beadwork was confined to cuffs, “epaulettes,” bib-like plackets and yokes, rectangular panels sewn to leggings, shirts, and dresses, and the like.

(57.2 x 69.8 cm), Cotton, synthetic, Guatemala, 20th century, The highly skilled weavers of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Guatemala, produce some of the finest, most complex, and most famous textiles in the region. They are known for their double-faced weaving technique, which produces identical patterns on both sides of the fabric. You can see this double-sided effect on the babys cap (6) and the womans ceremonial tzute, or woven cloth (3).

Habit à la disposition 1780-90 Italian The shimmering silk has been embroidered à la disposition, that is, following the contours dictated by the projected application, and is ready to be cut and sewn into a gown and petticoat. Two side skirt panels (a detail of one is pictured), a single petticoat panel, and a length of yardage for the skirt back, bodice, and sleeves are all sumptuously worked with silk floss accented by tiny silver sequins to depict meticulously arranged ivory ribbon swags and abstract floral sprays in pinks and greens.Although clients could specify colors, applied decoration, and styling, more often a dressmaking workshop would provide a variety of already embroidered panels from which the customer could select. Needlework designs, often adapted from pattern books, were transferred to the textile by pouncing, dusting over a pricked cartoon to leave dotted guidelines. Woman's Dress 14th-early 16th century Chuquibamba Women's wraparound dresses, made in the Andes of southern Peru during late preconquest centuries, were worn pinned at one shoulder and held in place by a wide belt. Basically such dresses when worn were large rectangles that were folded over at the top to form a kind of wide collar or double bodice. Those with panels of an intricately repeated pattern top and bottom, such as this example that is folded over at the top, were carefully balanced visually, the wide panels effectively framing the ordered diagonal elements in the center. Consistant with the Chuquibamba textile style, this dress is thought to have been woven in the southern Andean region near Arequipa, and to have been contemporary with Inca textiles that were made within a similar highland textile tradition. It was a tradition based on the use of camelid hair, here probably alpaca, with a design program of small scale repeated elements, and strong color of closely related hue
