Replica of the first Microscope by Leeuwenhoek. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek who achieved up to 300 times magnification using a simple single lens microscope. He sandwiched a very small glass ball lens between the holes in two metal plates riveted together, and with an adjustable-by-screws needle attached to mount the specimen. Christ is flanked by the apostles Peter and Paul, and the Virgin by archangels.The inscription indicates that this beautiful censer was given as a votive gift to a church or a shrine. Hat Stand, 1890-1910, 12-3/8 x 4-1/2 x 1-9/16 in. (31.4 x 11.4 x 4.0 cm), Wrapped bamboo, China, 19th-20th century, While bamboo was used throughout Chinese history to produce an astonishing variety of functional objects, the perishable nature of the material means only a small percentage of those works has survived. This rare folding hat stand, however, is well-preserved and it demonstrates the versatility of the material. The elegantly curved legs are hinged top and bottom on three horizontal struts, the bottom ones support circular motifs representing bronze coins. The legs are decoratively carved with blond, split cane. Lightweight and collapsible, the stand could travel easily or be readily stored.

Candlestick 15th or 16th century South Netherlandish or German Medieval man took advantage of the light of day as much as possible, but, in the early dark of winter, he had to have recourse to other forms of light, most frequently that of the fireplace. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the smoky torches of resinous wood, which formerly had been used to provide additional light in the rooms of castles, were generally restricted to use at outdoor events. Candles mounted in wall brackets, chandeliers, or candlesticks, and in some cases, oil lamps, were used to light interiors. Common candles made of tallow had wicks that needed constant trimming and burned with an unpleasant smell. The better quality candles, made of beeswax and used with pricket candlesticks, were so expensive that only the wealthy could afford them. Ships cannon (swivel-gun).This Dutch cannon was excavated from the reclaimed Haarlemmermeer in the second half of the 19th century. It may have been used during the Battle of Haarlemmermeer in 1573. The wooden support on which the cannon is mounted with six wrought-ironbands can swivel on an iron pin, allowing for greater accuracy in shooting at enemy ships.
