This is the now famous "Pimple" stormed at bayonet point by Australian troops in an amazing feat that opened the war to the capture of Shaggy Ridge, which for two months had barred, the approach to Bogadjim innorthern New Guinea. Known now as Green Snipers Pimple, it rises a sheer100 ft over the northern end of the 5,600 ft Shaggy Ridge - a Gibraltar in miniature that dominated the Ramu Valley. Following one of the biggest and most sustained artillery and dive bombing barrages of the Southwest Pacific War, Australian infantrymen literally clawed their way through fire to the crest of the crag.
