Shaving Fukurokuju from a Ladder, first half 18th century, Unknown Japanese, 24 1/8 x 9 1/8in. (61.3 x 23.2cm), Hanging scroll; ink and color on paper, Japan, 18th century, Daikoku and Fukurokuju are included among the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. Daikoku is associated with agriculture and is worshiped as a god of the fields. Fukurokuju, the god of longevity, is distinguished by his extremely elongated cranium, probably meant to suggest the vast wisdom he accumulated over his long life.

The face of a slender young woman has fallen off to reveal the skull beneath, epitomizing society's fleeting obsession with beauty and wealth. The pictorial 'Shanghai Manhua' (Shanghai Sketch), published between April 21, 1928 and June 7, 1930, was a mixture of drawings, photographs and images ranging from advertisements to social criticism and political caricatures. Shanghai Manhua was an outlet for professional cartoonists and sketch masters, generally of an avant garde or progressive nature. Many of the images printed in 'Shanghai Manhua' are observations of urban life in contemporaneous Shanghai, as well as often critical comment on the social mores of the time.

Uncle Wiggily Longears is the main character of a series of children's stories by American author Howard R. Garis (1873-1962). This illustration is from Gariss Uncle Wiggily and Alice in Wonderland and shows Uncle Wiggily and Alice. Uncle Wiggily stories first appeared in the 'News' in 1910, were syndicated in 1915, and continued to be published for more than forty years, at one time appearing in one hundred newspapers. Garis wrote 35 volumes of Uncle Wiggily stories under his own name, as well as numerous other children's books under several pseudonyms. William Edward Bloomfield Starkweather was also a painter, teacher, and writer, known for impressionist landscape, paintings and book illustrations.

The French studio portrait photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdérifirst patented the carte in 1854. His innovation of exposing not just one but eight photographic images on the same glass plate negative enabled cartes to be made cheaply and reproduced on a mass scale. During the late 1850s and throughout the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes depicting portraits of loved ones, celebrities, monarchs, and foreign types circulated en masse and spurred a veritable "cartomania." Collected in albums, traded among friends, and admired in drawing rooms, cartes put photography in the hands of virtually everyone, and thus offered a means of reflecting upon ones own social standing in an ever-expanding world. The Confederacion Nacional del Trabajo (CNT; 'National Confederation of Labour') is a Spanish confederation of anarcho-syndicalist labor unions affiliated with the International Workers Association (IWA; Spanish: AIT Asociacion Internacional de los Trabajadores). When working with the latter group it is also known as CNT-AIT. Historically, the CNT has also been affiliated with the Federacion Anarquista Iberica (Iberian Anarchist Federation FAI). In this capacity it was referred to as the CNT-FAI. Throughout its history, it has played a major role in the Spanish labor movement.
