Commemorative passion in memory of the Battle of Waterloo. The print was issued fifty years after the event. In a decorative edge, consisting of weapons, leaves, a family crest, a crown and lions, is a poem by Samuel Johannes van den Bergh. Under the poem the Batavian virgin and lion. In her left arm, the virgin has a medallion with the portrait of King Willem II. With her right hand, together with the lion, she has a banner with "Waterloo".

The boussessie

The Queen of the Fishes: Plate 8, 1894. Lucien Pissarro (British, 1863-1944). Woodcut printed in gray; book page: 19.2 x 13.3 cm (7 9/16 x 5 1/4 in.). Pissarro, son of the French Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro, moved to England in 1890. By 1894 he and his wife, Esther Bensusan Pissarro, had bought a printing press and established the Eragny Press. Influenced by William Morris, they were involved in every step of the production process: designing, cutting the woodblocks, setting type, and printing. The first book published by Ergany Press, The Queen of the Fishes, is based on an old fairy tale in which a peasant boy and girl escape the hardships of their lives by fantasizing that they have been turned into a giant oak and a splendid fish, respectively.

Leaf from a Book of Hours: Adam and Eve and the Fall of Man (Prefatory Miniature to the Office of the Virgin) (recto) and Text with Illustrated Border (verso) (1 of 3 Excised Leaves), c. 1510. France, Rouen, 16th century. Ink, tempera and liquid gold on vellum; each leaf: 17.9 x 12.8 cm (7 1/16 x 5 1/16 in.). Characteristic of the artist's hand, the bright orange-reds combine with deep blues, greens, and an abundance of gold wash in this leaf. He used fine parallel lines or crosshatching in gold to indicate the shading, highlights, and texture of draperies, suggesting some knowledge of printmaking, an art for which Rouen was also an important center. His figures have large, thickly outlined oval faces. This miniature also demonstrates the emerging fashion in both Rouen and Paris for highly involved, Italianate architectural frames: winged putti, swags, urns, garlands, scallop shells, pillasters, and masks.
