Saipan Beachhead Secure. In another bold stroke by American amphibious forces, combining the strength of the Coast Guard, Navy, Marines and Army, a foothold is gained on the shores of Saipan -- a foothold which in three weeks was to thrust the Japs northward over ridges and ravines to the extreme northern tip of the Marianas island. From this beachhead, on which Coast Guard landing barges and Army alligators rammed their noses, the offensive was launched that led to the recent capture of Garapan, capital of these strategic Jap islands.
