Private George Carum, a Syrian soldier, is depicted in this photograph. He served in Co. A of the 125th Infantry during World War I. Carum stood at a height of 5 feet 5 inches and weighed 150 pounds. Drafted in June 1918, he received one month of training in the U.S. before being deployed to the 32nd Division. Carum spoke both Arabian and English, although his fluency in English was limited. He immigrated to America in 1910, settling in Oklahoma City, where he worked as a dry goods peddler and clerk. His education consisted of completing third grade in Arabian schools and attending night school in America. Described as a diligent soldier, Carum performed his duties diligently but at a slower pace. He was born in Lebebab, Syria, and his most recent residence before the war was Gullesheim, Germany.
