2nd Lt. John O. Donaldson, son of Brig. Gen T.I. Donaldson, received the distinguished flying cross of the British Air Service. He was attached to the 32nd Squadron R.A.P. B.C.P. Lt. Donaldson's plane experienced engine trouble during an air battle on the British front on September 1, 1918, leading him to land in enemy territory. He successfully escaped from a German Camp on September 3rd but was recaptured on September 9th. However, he managed to escape again on September 26th and safely reached Holland on October 24, 1918. Along with four other officers, Lt. Donaldson is the first known to have successfully escaped from the Germans. He is credited with capturing ten Germans.
