Private Berhens stands amidst the ruins of the village of Vaux, photographed by Captain Harry Townsend, an official American military artist. The village was reduced to rubble by American artillery in about 20 minutes while driving out the enemy. Vaux stands as a testament to the intensity and concentration of the fire, as well as the valor of American soldiers in the fighting.
