"Mauritius" Sails Home For Christmas -- HMS Mauritius, pennants flying, comes in for Christmas at the Chatham Dockyard today.Home in time for Christmas after service in the East Indies Station the cruiser H.M.S. Mauritius arrived at Chatham Dockyard today (Tuesday). She was manned by the Chatham ship's company of H.M.S. Kenya, with which she had exchanged her Portsmouth crew at Trincomalee (Ceylon). Yamato (和?), named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province, was the lead ship of the Yamato class of battleships that served with the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. She and her sister ship, Musashi, were the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed, displacing 72,800 tonnes at full load and armed with nine 46 cm (18.1 inch) main guns. Neither ship survived the war. Laid down in 1937 and formally commissioned a week after the Pearl Harbor attack in late 1941, Yamato was designed to counter the numerically superior battleship fleet of the United States, Japan's main rival in the Pacific. Throughout 1942 she served as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet, and in June 1942 Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto directed the fleet from her bridge during the Battle of Midway, a disastrous defeat for Japan. During 1944, the balance of naval power in the Pacific decisively turned against Japan and, by early 1945, the Japanese fleet was much depleted and critica

The photo shows the armor ship HMS Sweden - the first vessel built in the Swedish Class. The motif occupies a large part of the image area and the ship is depicted obliquely from the front. The actual party is located in the background left in image and bow in the foreground to the right. The ship is resistant and her cannons on the front deck are clearly visible. In the bow, the gossen is hoisted, as well as the wobble flag in the stern. The ship's BOG is bryded by the small national weapon: Three crowns in a circular shield. This is also crowned by a crown. Aft appears some of the crew standing on the deck, but some are also found in the two shipboats located in the water along the ship's starboard side. Otherwise, the image of the sea is framed but also of a high sky with cloud formations. What is visible by the horizon shows a wooded land strip ..
