. 8 Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding) 2 Lieutenant Arthur Geoffrey Thurlow was granted a commission in August 1914. He died of wounds in Ras-el-tin Hospital, Alexandria, on 29 August 1915, aged 23. He is buried at the Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery in Alexandria, Egypt. Capt. J.A. Meissner

11th Reinforcement, 15 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force Private Bassett, the youngest son of a Queensland family, was employed as a commercial traveller before the First World War. He enlisted in Roma, Queensland, Australia on 5 July 1915 and sailed from Brisbane on board HMAT Seang Bee on 21 October 1915. Whilst serving with the Divisional Pack Transport Troop on the Western Front, Pte Bassett was awarded the Military Medal for his work in conveying supplies to battalion headquarters every night under sustained heavy fire during the Battle of Messines in June 1917. He went on to see action in the German Spring Offensive and was appointed lance corporal in July 1918. Shortly afterwards, Lance Corporal Basset was wounded by a gun shot wound to the wrist which necessitated the amputation of his hand and his retirement from active service on 23 September 1918. . King's Shropshire Light Infantry Captain English (1874-1941) was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He played cricket for Gloucestershire and played once for England in 1909. Captain English received his commission in 1895 and served in the Second Anglo-Boer War (during which he was wounded). He was promoted to captain in 1909 and major in 1915. During his First World War service, he was wounded again and was awarded the DSO (in 1917), the Croix de Guerre and twice Mentioned in Despatches. He retired from the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel on 29 November 1919. After leaving the Army, Ernest English became an actor, performing on stage and screen. . 10 (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars Lt Col Shearman was born in 1875 and received his commission in September 1895. He was promoted captain in 1901 and major in 1905. Lt Col Shearman saw active service during the Second Anglo-Boer War and accompanied his regiment to the Western Front on outbreak of war in 1914. Lt Col Shearman was killed, aged 39, on 13 May 1915 in the Ypres Salient. He is buried at Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery. Lt Vickers was wounded in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and died at Rouen on 8 January 1917. Lt Vickers is buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen. 19 (Queen Alexandra's Own Royal) Hussars (Commanding 21 Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)) Lt Col Settle was the only son of Lieutenant General Sir Henry Settle and was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He was posted to the Western Front with his regiment in August 1914 and was severely wounded during the Battle of Mons. Whilst convalescing, Lt Col Settle studied machine gunnery and subsequently, on returning to active service, took command of 21 Battalion. He continued to serve on the Western Front until March 1918, during which time he was wounded four times and Mentioned in Despatches three times. Lt Col Settle was also awarded the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order. He was killed, aged 26, at Cléry-sur-Somme whilst making what was reported as a gallant last stand with a small group of officers and men on 24 March 1918 during the German Offensive. . 3 Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Second Lieutenant Wallace was born in Calcutta on 24 September 1893. He attended Dulwich College before enlisting in the 3rd Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) in December 1913. He was attached to the 1st Battalion as a second lieutenant in August 1914. He was killed on 26 October 1914, aged 22, during an attack on the village of Noord Westhoek. He is commemorated at the Menin Gate in Ypres. . 20th Battalion, 5th Infantry Brigade, Australian Imperial Forces Major Harcus was born in Orkney, Scotland in 1881 and was a fluent speaker of Gaelic. He emigrated to Australia in 1907 and, after spending a year in New Zealand, settled in Sydney where he qualified as a barrister in 1912. During this time, he also served as an officer in the reserves of the New South Wales Scottish Rifles. On outbreak of the First World War, Major Harcus volunteered for active service and was part of the Australian force which took control of German colonies in Papua New Guinea in September 1914. In 1915, he sailed with his battalion to the Middle East and participated in the landings at Suvla Bay on 22 August. Major Harcus was killed in action, aged 34, at Tel el Kebir, on 11 December 1915. He is buried at Walker's Ridge cemetery, Gallipoli. Photograph presented by his mother, Mrs Harcus, Orkney. . 4 Battalion, Suffolk Regiment Lt Layard enlisted immediately after leaving Bedales School and was given a commission. He was badly wounded in 1916 while in charge of a trench mortar, and spent two years at home recovering from his injuries. He returned to the Western Front in June 1918. On 25 August, he was killed at Gommecourt while trying to help a wounded German soldier under machine-gun fire. . 6 Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Captain C G Barton was born in Co. Donegal, Ireland in 1889 and was educated at Cheltenham College and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He enlisted on the outbreak of war and was gazetted to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in September 1914. Captain Barton then served in Gallipoli in 1915, where he participated in the landing at Suvla Bay on 7 August and earned the Military Cross. After being evacuated from Gallipoli, he continued to serve with 10th (Irish) Division as part of the Salonika Force until September 1917 when he was moved to Palestine. In June 1918, Captain Barton was transferred to the Western Front as part of the force making good the British losses suffered during the German Spring Offensive. Captain Barton was killed, aged 28, on 17 October 1918, during the heavy fighting which occured in the final weeks of the war. He is buried at Honnechy British Cemetery near Le Cateau. . 11 Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles Lt Neill was reported missing believed captured, aged 21, at Thiepval on 1 July 1916 at the start of the Battle of the Somme but was subsequently confirmed as killed. Prior to his death, Lt Neill had taken command of B Company after Captain Craig MP had been wounded. Lt Neill is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Pilot Officer William 'Willie' McKnight, serving with No. 242 (Canadian) Squadron RAF, September 1940. Pilot Officer William Lidstone 'Willie' McKnight, a fighter pilot from Calgary, Canada, photographed during the Battle of Britain, when serving with No. 242 (Canadian) Squadron RAF. Between May and November 1940, McKnight achieved 16.5 victories in combats over France and England. He was shot down and killed during a low level intruder sortie ('Rhubarb') over France, on 12 January 1941.

Second-Lieutenant George McCubbin, the pilot who at the age of 18 and a half, brought down the aeroplane of German air ace, Max Immelmann on 18 June 1916. Date: 1916

. 63 (Royal Naval) Divisional Reserves Lieutenant H A Bass initially served with the Army, enlisting with the 14th (2nd Reserve) (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish) in January 1915. He attended Newmarket Cadet School in November 1916 and received his commission in the 7th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment. Lt Bass then transferred from the Territorial Force to serve as an officer with the Royal Marines on the Western Front in March 1917. He is believed to have survived the war. 9 Battalion, Essex Regiment Pte Tickle enlisted on 7 September 1914 and was accepted although he was under age. He was killed on 3 July 1916, aged 17, during the Battle of the Somme. His mother's handwritten note on the photograph (taken a few days before his death) describes him as 'One of the very best'. Pte Tickle is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Photograph presented by his mother, Mrs E A Tickle of Hornsea. Private Tickle's battalion formed part of 12 Division during the Battle of the Somme. The Division moved up to Baizieux (Somme) on 30 June and reached Hénencourt and Millencourt by 10am on 1 July, in reserve to the British infantry attack that had begun earlier that morning. It moved to relieve 8th Division, which had suffered a severe repulse at Ovillers-la-Boisselle, during the night of 1-2 July. 59 Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force Pte Gregory was born and educated in Victoria, Australia. Before the outbreak of war, he qualified and worked as a solicitor. Pte Gregory enlisted in 7 Reinforcement of 21 Battalion, 6 Infantry Brigade and went into camp in August 1915. On 18 November he embarked for service in Egypt. Seven months later he was transferred to 59 Battalion, charged with guarding the Suez Canal and carrying out desert patrols. The battalion was ordered to the Western Front in June 1916 for the start of the Battle of the Somme. Private Gregory served with the Machine Gun Section of C Company. He was killed in action, aged 31, on 19 July 1916 during an assault on German trenches near Armentières (Français: Tué le 19 juillet 1916 à l'ge de 31 ans pendant un assaut contre les tranchées allemandes près d'Armentières). W. (Willem) Knijke (1922-). Emigrated at the age of 4 with his parents to Canada. Classified by the Dutch Infantry in Stratford, Ontario. On September 22, 1942 by boat to England and on 7 October 1942 classified by the Princess Irene Brigade. Reported to the commands before the end of that month. After the training classified at No. 2 Dutch Troop. During Operation Market Garden classified by the 82nd US Airborne Division and landed by Groesbeek by glider. During operation Infatuate 2 landed at Westkapelle and injured. After the war placed on the Bloemendaal Stormschool and then back to Canada. Distinguish with the bronze cross.

He was commanding B Company when he was reported missing, aged 23, at Guillemont on 8 August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Beamont, pilot of Britain's first jet bomber.Among the aircraft which will be seen at the annual display of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors, to be held at Farnborough (Hants) from Sept.7-11 will be Britain's first jet bomber, the Canberra MK.1.Flying this machine which has been built by the English Electric Co., and Avon jet engine will be King Commander R.P. ('Bob') Beamont, wartime fighter pilot who piloted the jet on its initial flight in May of this year. . 11 Battalion, Cheshire Regiment Lieutenant Ford was the son of the Venerable G A Ford, former Archdeacon and Senior Chaplain to HM Indian Ecclesiastical Establishment. He was born in Norwich and educated at Marlborough College before enlisting with the Royal Field Artillery on outbreak of the First World War. By November 1914, Lt Ford was commanding a machine gun section on the Western Front. He was fatally wounded by a sniper whilst conducting a reconnaissance to find a German emplacement at Ploegsteert on 30 November 1915 and died, aged 20, the following day. . 6 Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) Lt Senior was reported missing, aged 22, on 3 September 1916 at Thiepval during the Battle of the Somme.
