Bunbury's name does not appear on this caricature, but he is credited as designer in later variations (17.3.888-222 and 59.533.1738). The viol da gamba player likely represents Carl Friedrich Abel, or possibly Johann Christian Bach. The oboe player has been identified as Johann Christian Fisher, and the French horn player as Giovanni Punto (born Jan Stich). These men came to London from the Continent hoping to take advantage of the patronage of George III-the British king was also prince-elector of Hanover, married Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and enjoyed German music.. The Sacrifice of Polyxena, after Pietro da Cortona ca. 1759-70 Jean Robert Ango This black chalk drawing is a copy after a painting by Pietro da Cortona of 1623-24, formerly in the Sacchetti palace and now in Pinacoteca Capitolina, Rome (inv. 153). Ango is a largely forgotten French artist who made a living in eighteenth-century Rome by producing chalk copies for patrons. This was one of many acquired by the abbé de Saint Non, who would later publish a compendium of etchings after the paintings and antiquities he had seen in Italy.The museum owns a related drawing, The Infant Moses before Pharaoh, after Giovanni Battista Ruggieri (61.234), possibly once mounted together with this one.. The Great Western Railway (Cartoon for Punch, February 18, 1898) February 18, 1898 Sir (Edward) Linley Sambourne British Sambourne here humorously contrasts modernity (the expansion of British railroads) with tradition (the River Thames used as the primary means of travel west of London). A bearded Father Thames stands amongst reeds but wears modern skulling gear and wields an oar. He is surrounded by water nymphs frightened by a steam engine looming over them on an embankment. The latter resembles a monster with rolling eyes and pronged couplers. The image cleverly responds to John William Waterhouse's "Hylas and the Nymphs" (1896), exhibited at the Royal Academy in the summer of 1897, with the lovely nudes whose long hair is entwined with flowers resembling those in the painting..
